We have a 5 year old Dell laptop and when we turn it on or bring it out of hibernation, the screen turns a strange pinkish hue and then slowly turns normal. Is this a sign that our screen is about to die?

Hi jfaircloth. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Seeing that there is a pinkish hue could be an indication that the screen is going south. Have you tried updating your graphics drivers for your graphics card? If that doesn't solve the problem then you might be SOL. :(

That's a common symptom of a CRT that's showing its age. The cathode emission on one of the color guns is getting a little weak and it takes longer for it to get warmed up to a balanced level with the other guns. That causes the color rendition to be incorrect for a short time. They can still last for years with that condition. It's probably not about to die but just showing its age. Me too. ;)

Surferdude, ...but this is a LAPTOP. I am not aware of any laptops with CRTs. ;)

:D A laptop with a 19" crt monitor, I can just picture that. (yes, pun intended)

Looks like I showed more than my age. I plead for mercy and pray for better reading skills in the future. ;)

sd2, your pleas fall on deaf ears :D

I have seen it as a sign of a failing laptop LCD.

CRT?...mmm...you may be able to work by connecting an external monitor.

Then jfaircloth would have to shop for a laptop carrying case with a pocket for the CRT. :D

Seriously though, I purchased a laptop LCD screen/lid assembly for an old Dell Inspiron (2500?) once via eBay because I wanted a larger screen size. Install was pretty easy.

Ah-ha, new innovations. A desktop carrying case, but you might find one arm a lot longer than the other after a while :D

My seriously though...a 5 year old system, do you throw any money at it or save towards it's replacement. If you can turn it into a "pseudo" desktop machine, would it be better than if you decided that the cost (time and effort) of replacing the part/s was worth it. jfaircloth's dilemma/decision.

I work on the premise that after 4 years the system is getting old and "anything" could happen. How much do you "prop-up" an aging system? As I said, do you save the funds towards a new system (without even considering that it could be turned into a non-mobile, pseudo desktop machine).

    Matt
