Hi and welcome to the BBS,

May as well try something quick and simple. Disconnect any other USB devices. Go to Device Manager and uninstall everything under the heading Universal Serial Bus Controllers. They will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot. Connect your MP3 player before anything else.

You can go back to Device Manager and check that there is a USB controller listed as "Enhanced ". If not, you need to find and install the USB drivers for the motherboard.

Is this the only USB device that the laptop won't recognise? Did anything else USB work in the laptop? Try a few other devices a flash stick, or a usb mouse. Before you uninstall check to make sure you have the drivers, and or get the latest ones down from the Dell website, you will need your laptop system code or be certain about the series and model number.
