There is nothing to be shocked about. It is a technical limitation that applies to any and all 32-bit operating systems running on x86 architecture.

    Here’s the math...

    2^32 = 4,294,967,296 bytes
    4,294,967,296 / (1,024 x 1,024) = 4,096 MB = 4GB

I'll probably wait until I have to buy another computer, unless I can get a free version of win 7. Can't afford to buy an OS so will have to stay with Vista.

I'd never go back to Win98 (unless every other OS became unusable), any more than I'd go back to my '59 Chevy Impala just because I liked the looks of it.

XP Pro SP3 is my OS of choice, and the Classic view can be selected quickly and easily.

Have 4 computers in house, only 2 are age/hardware sensible to upgrade to w7. Have purchased 2x pre-sale copies of w7 Premium, but may request Amazon to upgrade to Family Pack when pricing becomes available .. if MS / Amazon agree.
WHY will I upgrade to w7 ... Two primary reasons.
    1) MS appears to have done this OS right. Many are running it, majority are liking it. With XP approaching end of life MS support, w7 should / could enjoy as many years as XP.
    2) Hopefully w7 will motivate / unify global software for 64bit drivers and 3rd party application support. I will be moving my computers to 64bit OS and it appears w7 may finally put 32bit to rest.

As you may have noticed, my move to w7 is more a "Nuts and Bolts" and not a "Glitz and Glow ". All 4x of our XP computers are setup for pure "Performance ". Will set up w7 the same way ... which means MS's "Areo glass" look and view will have to "shine on" someone else's machine.

64 bit computing is coming - but it's gonna be a while before everyone adjusts to new, 64 bit capable programs (since the 32 bit one's work just as well). I still use a 32 bit browser solely because Flash isn't compatible with the 64 bit browser (and Adobe says "we're working on it ").

Microsoft has committed to a 3 year release cycle - so we can expect to see Win8 sometime in 2012/13. They did this because of the problems that came from waiting so long to move from XP to Vista.

My shock has to do with the fact that you'll soon be able to buy the third generation of an OS (not counting before XP) that will still only recognize <4GB of your RAM.

It makes Vista 32-bit sound like an oxymoron...an OS that can hobble your gaming performance because a) it's a memory pig and b) it recognizes <4GB of your RAM.

It's obvious why these OSes are still available in 32-bit but the 64-bit train needs to get moving.

If you're not going 64-bit with Win 7 and all your stuff works fine in XP, what's your motivation to migrate to 7?

The following is a good read per memory use and needs from "Tom's Hardware" .. Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?
For browsing, email, and IM'ing the current crop of Netbooks/32bit /2GB work just fine. As power users mature into w7/64bit, they will find ways to consume the memory. For myself, I see VM / multiple OS's as a way to challenge memory constraints.

Like many who have already posted, I will stick with XP Pro at least until I get a new PC. After previous experiences with upgrades, I prefer what works and I am comfortable with. I also, like others, use and prefer the Windows Classic view.

That is no shock, as I tried to explain, it is a physical limitation. a 32-bit OS will never be able to directly access > 4GB.

And yea, it is actually <4GB, since you'd have to subtract the video memory (which also can't address over 4GB, so needs <4GB to re-map).

I've understood that before I even asked the basically rhetorical question.

My perspective is more in this vein...

"Why are mfrs. still putting floppy drive connectors (or worse, serial and parallel ports) on their mainboards?" i.e. when will be M$ stop making 32-bit OSes but that question isn't even really worth asking at this moment in time.

Possibly in the next OS, there will be one 64-bit flavor that will be backward-compatible with 32-bit apps. That would seem to be in M$' best interest.

    This isn't a Windows issue - it's a manufacturer/writer's issue.

Why does HP include both AMD and Intel drivers in their PC's - to keep the cost down.
Why do manufacturer's still have BIOS's that implement the Parallel port - when the system doesn't have one installed (and errors pop up in Event Viewer because of this) - to keep the cost down.

Microsoft 64 bit systems are backwards compatible with 32 bit apps. But there is no way that they'll ever be backwards compatible with 32 bit drivers because they must run in kernel mode (which is 64 bit by definition on a 64 bit OS).

I will wait for a few months before i upgrade to W7. Just something i do
before buying any new release of windows. Gives time for people to
    generate their impressions.

I'll upgrade to 7 when MicroShaft gives it away free to us sorry Vista owners. They took my money on Vista Home Premium and I'll be darned if they get any more for what should be a free service pack, IMO.

The wife's laptop is happily running XP and will do so until it dies. :D
