I pre-ordered Home Premium for $50 but if the upgrade process is what I consider to be "nutty" like what I've been hearing - as in:

    - requires installed and activated previous OS on HDD
    - upgrade renders your previous OS registration key to become unusable

I might just sell it and go with the full version. I really wish they had simply gone with the "please insert your previous OS' cd ".

Even better, I wish M$ had discounted the full verison - I think peeps would have been on that like white on rice!

None of this has been confirmed or denied - just total confusion :)

If you subscribe to the paid version of Windows Secrets there was a whole article on these aspects 23 July.

Course ALL previous upgrades were Not a 2 for 1 sale. If you upgrade from one version - you're not suppose to re-use the old version.

What I meant by unusable was that it was COMPLETELY unusable...meaning that if you ever had to perform the upgrade again - due to drive failure, for example - it could not be used.

Did you see the article put out in MaximumPC on all this? They seemed pretty sure about what they were talking about.

A friend of mine is getting his info from technet and it doesn't sound good. One of the articles I read about these upgrade limitations inferred that the Vista upgrade was even worse than the things I mentioned above. That's kind of hard to imagine.

I'd be more than happy to hear that this is all fear-mongering but I doubt it.

I agree with Microsoft when they reduced the number of different versions of the OS to a less confusing 3. However, 7 Pro, and 7 Ultimate $20 apart in both the upgrade versions, and full non-OEM versions, notwithstanding this "pre-sale ".

It could be a genius move on the part of MS, but I don't see it, if it is!?

WHAT?!? That fantabulous, fantastic, $50 special that I missed is just for a stinking, lousy UPGRADE VERSION?

If that's true then I'm glad I missed it.

    Lucky you!

At least you can now pay double for the upgrade, or even more for the full product... who would want to save $$$??

All this time, I thought $50 was for the full version. Cheap Redmond $%$^$&!

You can't use the upgrade version if you don't have a recent version to upgrade from. I've never seriously considered installing V. And I don't like the idea of the upgrade disabling your old version in the process. :p The full version would be required for me, if I decide to install it at all.

Probably the "street price" of the full version will come down a few weeks after GA.
