I want to set-up a simple network(?) at home.

I know to turn "on" file sharing & printer sharing and to connect one computer to my printer via a USB cable. And, this computers needs to be on to facilatate sharing.

I also know that the other two(2) computers need to be hooked-up to the computer with the printer cable connected. So, there is a total of three(3) computers accessing one(1) printer.

I do not want to use a router. My preference is to "hard wire ".

But how do I do this?

    Are special cables required?

Does the "printer" computer need additional hardware?

    please help.

    Thanks

    Hi palandines,

A router will be the cheaper and easier option. What you're asking is possible but it will require multiple network cards in the PC and is far from a simple network.

Use a router or a switch to network the computers. Connect the printer to one of the computers via usb and share this printer with the other computers over the network.

That's the easiest and cheapest way to go about it.

It would cost more and be more difficult to setup usb networking, or to use multiple networks cards in one of the computers.

    Hello palandines,
I agree w/ TonyT and wildfire. My only question would be, why? Not being smart-elic just would like to know, just 'cause. Good luck

The vast majority of routers come with Ethernet ports (for hard wire connections).
No special cables. Use Ethernet cables from router to each computer (use CAT5, 5e, or 6 for long runs). You now have a fast, hard wire connection to allow simple file. Attach printer to one computer and when shared will be available to other computers on network (requires printer drivers installed on each computer).
