    Hello,

Lately on my Laptop my DVD Drive will not show up at all! I've tried taking it out and making sure its connected which it is.

It doesn't show up in the BIOS, Ubuntu, Windows, or anything else i boot! (I've tried Fedora via USB..)

Thing is the drive functions, like it opens and closes and if I put a cd in it, it will make the sounds of it actually spinning and reading the cd normally which is odd...

Now comes to my question, could it be the onboard chip that controls the drive failing, or could it be the drive itself even though it will read cd's (from what I hear)?

I did use it alot as i do test out different Linux systems and have reinstalled Windows numerous time (switching between XP and Vista, etc.)

Laptop Model: Compaq Presario F756NR (F700 series)
    DVD Drive (from sticker): GSA-T20N (S05D) WC05

Boot up with the drive disconnected...Shutdown and reconnect - boot back up to see if Windows re-detects it.

    Is it an IDE drive?
Try putting it on its own cable and changing the jumper to master.

I tried doing the boot up without and tried booting with after and nothing. I don't think its a Windows issue either since Ubuntu won't even find nor will the BIOS even show its connected even though it does all the startup checks on it...

dale456654: Its a laptop drive (its has its own kind of connection), and I checked the drive even looking at the mainboard, sadly no jumpers anywhere.

    Sorry I didn't see that.

If you have another laptop with the same conection you could swap them around to see if it works then, or if you know anyone else that has a laptop with a dvd drive.

Friend of mine has a Compaq laptop w/ XP-Ubuntu, has a similar problem. She said she has to push the drive all the way in as far as it will go in order for the connection to be established. Sometimes the drive is recognized and sometimes it's not. I believe it's an issue with the internal connector used in some Compaq laptops. It could also be the connector on the drive that has worn out, test by using a different drive and see what happens. You could buy another drive, test it, and return it if it the problem persists.
