I've been asked to remove all owner-related info from an XPP laptop, as the customer is on-selling it.

Managed to get rid of everything except a named folder, with the path:
    C:\Documents and settings\Sarah

'Sarah' is the name I want to delete, and replace with something anonymous, like "Owner ". 'Sarah' doesn't even belong to my customer, as she was the second owner; the name must have been inserted by the original purchaser when setting up the laptop from new.

I've run a Doug Knox 'change owner' script but that doesn't go down very deep - it's mainly cosmetic. Ran a couple of 'search and replace' registry fixes, but they didn't work either. Obviously, this 'Sarah' label is set at a deep, protected level.

Short of reinstalling Windows, I can't think of any other fixes. Anyone able to help?

    Thanks :)

BTW: 'Sarah' isn't in listed as a User Account. There's just 'Owner' and 'Guest' in main mode, with 'Administrator' available in Safe Mode. Only Administrator is passworded with my own code. Simple File Sharing is in use.

If you go to Control Panel -> User Accounts, is Sarah listed?

Sarah may be the actual Administrator account renamed and you can't delete the Administrator account. Can you log in as Administrator in Safe Mode? It may actually be the Sarah account.

Mattman, as I said, 'Sarah' isn't listed as a User account. There are only 'Owner' and 'Guest' user accounts in main mode. In Safe Mode, there's also 'Administrator', of course, so that a Safe Mode start offers the choice of Owner and Administrator.

    But no 'Sarah'.

Also note that this is not going to remove all traces of the user. If the new owner would run some software he still will be able to recover tons of (private?) data.

There's only one sure way & that is to use specialized software to completely wipe the HD, and then clean install the OS.

Thanks for your help everyone. The customer has taken back the machine so I can't take it any further. But I've learnt something about the indelibility of entries made at OEM setup time.

If you're setting up a computer for the first time, consider NOT using your, or any, real name. I mean, who knows if or when you might decide to onsell the computer. Do you REALLY want this computer to be labelled with your name forever? Because that's what will happen unless Windows is reinstalled.

I never enter a real name when I'm setting up a new machine, for exactly that reason, whether it's for a designated customer or not. Instead, I use the term "Owner ". It's personal enough, but at the same time anonymous.

    Thanks again to all respondents.

If it might give you any further info, I expect the account is the Administrator account in safe mode, but labelled Sarah in normal mode.

When you rename an account, the \Documents and settings\username doesn't change, it stays as it was originally named.
