Ok. I'm not trying to open someone's random PC here but it was my sis's Windows XP Media Center 2005. This is the same laptop I once got help with removing virus.

Awhile ago, I received a text from my sis about her laptop is not functioning because you need a password. As far as we know, we didn't put any password on it. If you will provide any help here, you can also help those malicious people who wants to open random password protected PC so I'll be careful.

I got a program I'm going to burn from its ISO image and I hope this will work. This program "will reset" the password for the PC. I don't know how to use this as this is my first time to see this case. One program is an EXE program and it will reveal password but I don't know if it will be done in DOS mode because I will open the 'sick' laptop.

One last option is to open the admin account and see what's wrong with the current account.

I don't know what happened but can you shed some light on me on why there's a password in my sis's account? Could it be a virus or a malware?

    -Chris

PS: I'm going to a 5 hour trip tomorrow or the day after so I can fix my sis's laptop. I also need a blank CD or a USB Flash Drive (I don't know how to boot from flash drive, though)

I'm sure you know that we do not assist with lost passwords, nor with 'hacking' software, etc ..... Posting Rules #6
This is as far as we go .....

How to log on to your Windows XP-based computer if you forget your password or if your password expires

BTW - you have tried a blank password?

That's the info I'm looking for (sort of)

Also, I'm aware of the consequences that this topic may provide so I'm avoiding any "misuse "

I'll mark this one as resolve as you provided such infos. Thank you very much. I hope my plan works.

It's not me who's having the problem but my sis who is 5 hours away from me, our house.

I'll tell her to see the blank password trick. If not, I'll go there to fix it.

what's the key combo for converting the XP log on to windows classic. the one you will prompt the username?

Oh. I'm not asking how to open as I might open it (finger crossed). I'm asking who did this happened? I'm sure it was fine when I brought it to her boarding house and it was usable but I was sent a message that it's locked up for some reason. Was it a virus that's doing the cause?

Appreciate your concern - this is a very grey area :)

I have no idea if a virus or malware could cause this situation - I doubt it, but you may like to start a thread in the General Security forum on this.
Ctrl + Alt + Del (twice?) at boot/login.

I arrived to my sis and my programs are ready but the sad news is that my text didn't reached her and thus she was forced to go to a PC repair shop and ASK THEM TO REFORMAT IT. I was disappointed as one PC CANNOT be reformatted unless necessary. Back to square one and re-install everything I put in that laptop. sigh

Time for me to hack the whole hard drive and recover some files. I hope those no-good repair men didn't format the second partition.

Don't blame the technician, you are the one who failed to successfully communicate your intentions to your sister and she's the one who OK'ed a reformat.

A good "repairman" could have given you every user password on that machine. Hopefully you had an enjoyable drive.

    ;)

This will be my final post for this topic. This can now be freely lock if necessary to avoid off topic or other means.

My sis's laptop has only one partition and it's only 80GB. We got it repaired and they (NEO PHILIPPINES) asked us why there's no other partition. I asked myself, it's their laptop, why not make a partition? So we proceed with the repair one year ago.

Now that I successfully made another partition, it was great and we are able to do back up of files for my sister - 35GB/45GB. then last two days, something struck. This is what happened. Now that I arrived on my sis's boarding house, look what I saw - they joined the two partition into one leaving with no files on the laptop. Who would not get angry at that?

So, I'll file a complain against NEO PHILIPPINES for improper repair. My sis asked for a reformat on one partition and look at what they did. I wish I can swear but I will abide by the rules here in this community and to avoid getting banned

Anyway, I'll look for a program that can recover for free. I'm sure there are some but hard to find. It's gotta be free.

I sympathise with the situation and suggest you look at Recuva - you may be lucky. It's freeware BTW.
