[Asus A7V8X-X shutting down after a few seconds]

    Hello all,

    I need help, i am lost at this point.

    Motherboard Asus A7V8X-X
    Chip Athlon 1800 + XP
    Ram 1gig DDR 333

    I will not start up . it just keeps shutting down .. I can get into the bios for a bit 10 -20 seconds shuts down .. I have all the hard drives, CD roms everything disconnected. Been though many different ram simms new ones old ones. did a fresh thermal paste on the chip. and still nothing ... if i leave it past the post screen it dosnt last long before it shuts down and restarts. Its probly 5 years old maybe 6

    any ideas?

    power supply? just old and dosnt want to work anymore? chip? board? its killing me!

    Dave,

    Welcome to the BBS. This is a tough call as it could be any of the above. I'd advise that you visually inspect the capacitors for starters. If you notice any bulging or a dome-like appearance or any brown discoloration or oozing of brownish material, you've got a problem. Next recommendation would be to pull the memory and the video card and clean the contacts using a soft pencil eraser wiping down (not across) those contacts to remove any oxidation. Follow with a Q-Tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and then a dry Q-Tip before reseating memory and video card. If still no go, substitute a known good working power supply and post back re: status.
