Weird issue, I have a copy of Windows Vista Business X64 installed on my C: drive which is a Samsung Spinpoint F1 500GB

However, it appears the bootmgr and boot folder are located on my E: drive which I use simply to store files, work and music. It's a Western Digital 400GB disc. Not sure how it got there.

The consequence is that the E/Western Digital drive always has to be selected first in the boot sequence, before the Samsung disc or I get the dreaded "BootMGR is missing, press ctrl+alt+delete to restart ".

How do I move my bootMGR and presumably boot folder from the E drive to the C drive? I tried copy/pasta but I got an error saying some files were in use, just BCD.sys apparently.

I will be replacing the Western Digital disc which is why I need to fix it :)

The normal solution to "Bootmgr is missing" is to boot from the Vista DVD, answer a few questions, navigate to the Repair Option and choose Command Prompt, then:
Type BOOTREC /FIXMBR (the capitals are for clarity only) and press Enter
Type BOOTREC /FIXBOOT (the capitals are for clarity only) and press Enter
Finally, close the cmd prompt, remove the DVD and let the computer restart.

If you don’t have a Vista DVD you can download and create a Recovery Disk x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) click here . After downloading the ISO image to your hard disk, burn it to a CD (a DVD is not necessary as the x86 (32-bit) version is 120MB and the x64 (64-bit) version is 148MB).

Hi, thanks for the reply. Problem is, I already have the BootMGR files... just they are located on the wrong disc.

When I go to repair my copy of Windows, it shows the installation of Vista as being on my E:/ Drive where the bootMGR file is located, despite all of the Windows files being on my C:/ drive!

    Try disconnecting the E drive.

When I do that, I obviously get the "BootMGR not found..." error.

So, I should disconnect and then attempt to rebuild?
