The xp on my desktop is not booting up. It boots up to the compaq screen showing options to enter bios but after that it's just a blank screen with a single cursor blinking at the top when it should start loading windows. I changed the boot order and got it to boot to the cd/dvd rom drive and go into XP setup off of the disk in which I thought I could repair from there but repair is not an option on the setup screen, just install or exit install. I don't mind redoing the whole entire install except that I have photos on the hard drive from my Easter Holiday that I REALLY don't want to lose. If anyone can help me by either getting this pc working again or at least running me through how to export the jpg files off of the hard drive...I would be so appreciative!!!

Hi SeaShells. Try following these steps:

    1. When the computer boots up after the BIOS shows try pressing F8 on the keyboard which will bring up the advanced boot options menu. From that menu select Last Known Good Configuration and press enter.
    2. If that doesn't work go back into the advanced boot options and select Safe Mode.
    3. If that still doesn't get the computer to startup then boot from a Windows XP CD.
    4. When you boot from the CD do you see an option that says Press R to boot into the recovery console? If you see that option press R.
    5. Once you boot into the recovery console it will ask you which Windows installation you wish to log into.
    6. Press 1 and hit enter.
    7. Next type the administrator password. If you don't have a password then leave it blank otherwise type it in and hit enter.
    8. Next type the following commands and hit enter after each one.

    fixboot
    fixmbr
    chkdsk /r

You may be asked to confirm an action after typing in the commands. Type Y to confirm the action if you are asked. After check disk has finished checking your harddrive type exit to quit setup. Hopefully the computer will now boot.
    9. If the system still doesn't boot then power off the machine, open the case up and take out the harddrive. If you have another computer hook up the harddrive as a slave drive where you can copy all the important data off the slaved drive onto another harddrive.
    10. If you would rather not hook up the harddrive as a slave drive then try Performing a Repair Installation of Windows XP.

Ran through all of that, after the disk check it was stated that there was an unrecoverable error...I'm trying puppy Linux right now to see if I'm able to mount the drive to at least copy the files onto my external. I really do not want to end up buying another drive but it looks like I'm going to have to, puppy is not even recognizing my current HD at this point.

Before you give up, try TestDisk. It's free. I have had good results with it on occasion.

Check your HD data and power cable also.
