    Hi all,

When I click on the Windows Orb, I have the options to sleep, shut-down, etc.

I want to put a shortcut on my Desktop for Sleep. Does anyone know where the Sleep .exe or .dll file is and what it's called?

Try clicking the arrow button beside the shutdown button in the start menu. to create a shortcut, right click on the desktop, hover over "new" and click Create New Shortcut. Enter a name and for your command enter, "shutdown /r /t 00" and click finish. I may be wrong in some spots but the command should work, one way to test it is press "Win Key + R ". Type "cmd" and hit enter. Type "shutdown /r /t 30" to give you 30 seconds instead of immediately shutting down . To cancel, type "shutdown /a" That will abort the process. For more options, type "shutdown /h "

    Hi jpChris and jms1989,

Not wishing to take focus away from jms1989's advice but always trying to find an easier user friendly way to get things done, the below may help.

    This may be easier:

    http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/73989-restart.html

Please note the list of links/options for the shutdown choices, "sleep" is among them. While these instructions are reported to be for vista I have down loaded and tested, both, the restart and shutdown shortcut and found these to work on win7 as well. I see no reason why the "sleep" shortcut would not work, too.

    update:
Had some time on my hands and decided to check out the "sleep shortcut ", since the link given involved a vbs procedure. I found this did not work for me.

I have however found that if I use the "restart shortcut ":
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/73989-restart.html ,copy or duplicate it and select it's properties and paste the following bolded command line in the shortcut tab/target type_in field:
    %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState

that the shortcut now becomes a sleep shortcut that works. After a rename this should also work for you. Complication may be "hibernation ". I have this disabled, but understand that if you use such this shortcut may cause hibernation instead of sleep.

    -------F.Y.I. expansion-------------------
I believe it's the file "shutdown.exe ", which is in the \systems32 folder, that controls shutdown behavior based on command switches and apparently the PowrProf.dll does same.

    @jms1989, & @goddez1

Thank you, but I use Wizmo to Reboot and Shutdown. Wizmo works for other apps I use, also, and it works great with W7 "” except for Sleep\Standby.

Next time I'm in W7, I'll give creating a shortcut a try. But, I think I tried that already and wasn't successful. I also tried the Vista thingy, too, and it didn't work for me either; it shut off the monitor, but everything else froze, wouldn't wake up and I had to do a manual shutdown.

As far as the command line dealywad (I think that's the correct technical term), I already tried that with the Standby\Sleep Download and got the same freeze results. However, I'll try it again with "goddez1's" suggestion, do a cut and paste, and see if that works.

Sleep\Standby is important where I am; it gets hot and I don't want to shut down with the CPU at 140+° and the internal temperature at 110°. Standby\Sleep turns everything off except the fans (I have 6) so when it cools off, I can click my Wizmo shortcut and it shuts down. Although with W7 it takes about 30 seconds or more to shut down and the CPU temp starts rising again. However, with XP, shutdown is 8 seconds flat.

    Hi again jpChris,

Definitely give this a shot, as I have included in previous thread but will repeat below:

If this doesn't work I do have another suggestion that you may have better luck with. Let me know. :)

    Hi goddez1,

Thanks. I won't be back in W7 for a couple of days because I'm burned out on it. I've spent the last solid week on it and I had to get back to XP to regain my sanity.

At this point all I'm doing with 7 is playing with it "” I gave up trying to do any work on it "” because it's just a RC. Plus, XP SP3 is going to be supported until 2014. By that time W10 with SP4 will be out. :D
