Hi, im having problem with a xp box.. my set up is 2 computers connected to a linksys router which is connected to cable modem. One of the computers works perfectly, it can go on the interent, access network perfectly both in xp and linux. The other computer was working perfectly, but for some reason now all it can do is access the router. I can ping the modem, but i cant access it directly. I have double checked that the ips, gateway and dns numbers are right. Anybody know how I can fix this problem? Thanks!

From your post I assume it was working. If not, give details. Otherwise:

Try start~run~cmd and then ipconfig /flushdns and see if that fixes you up. If so, check around for one of the "how to" articles for a registry tweak that will prevent XP from caching bad DNS information.

Newt you may have given me a clue on a problem I'm having on a XP box at home. This machine will not obtain an IP from DHCP no matter what I do. I have swapped cards, cables, and everything but reinstalled. If I manually put in an IP, Sub, Gateway, DNS server it works fine as long as the IP is out of the DHCP scope. I will try the C:\ipconfig /flushdns when I get home.
    Thanks,

In your case you may want to use /release_all instead of /flushdns. Sounds like it's holding on to an old IP address. :)

fragbait - if you can stuff in manual settings and have it work, the card is fine. And the DHS caching would only cause you to be unable to connect to a specific internet site.

You have something else busted. Two things to check:

right-click "my computer" and select manage. Then open services and take a look at the DHCP entry. In properties, it should be set to automatic start. The path line should be
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. Logon should be as a "Local System Account" and the "interact with desktop" block not checked. The specific dependencies will vary according to how you are set up. And the service should be running when you first get into services and look at it. Since it's running inside a svchost.exe shell you won't see anything you can identify in the task manager processes or applications.

If all those are as they should be, check your event logs for problems that look related to DHCP failure. I'd suggest setting the filter to only show problems - i.e., no "success audit" or "information" entries.

Come up in safe mode without network support do

    Both ipconfig /flushdns & /release_all!

Then remove all internet/wan settings IP's Dns everything!

Check Lan settings on this page clear everything including automaticaly detect!

Then reboot to full mode go to control panel-internet options-settings and rebuild the connection from scratch!

    Hi Fragbit

    OK!

Yea I wasn't thinking on that one but safe mode with is OK for this!

My Senior moments are now becoming almost constant!

Now is the time to run a long (new jumper to another wall jack that is known to be good! Or move the CPU! Do this even if you are now going into a Hub /Switch or router!

If you still have the problem it is now time to switch the NIC!

If it is a 3Com NIC after removing it from control panel and shutting down remove the card! Make sure to come back up once without the card! Then if it is a 3Com run their Preinstal utility before reinstall!

    One other thing!
I am sure you have a full set of event logs!

Here is the way I use the logs to trouble shoot!

1st just clear all logs save if you want!

Reboot and immediately check the logs, this will disclose and isolate any boot incidents. Handle these!

Then clear again but do not reboot but immediately perform the problem! Then immediately recheck the logs! Any errors from this function would be there now! Of course there may be a few normal entries too!

If this don't work then you need to find another BBS that knows something about this shi*! LOL!

    One final before I leave!

What about Newt's question about browsing!

Try to map to a drive letter. Will it allow this, if so does it struggle to do so!

If it does struggle or no, go to my computer and dbl click the mapped drive. Does it struggle here?
