As to newsgroups - I don't use them either but would imagine you should have setup your newsgroups on the new drive and then moved the old newsgroup dbx files to overwrite the directory and all messages.

re: your TV card - suggest you go to control panel and remove the problem device. Then shutdown and physically remove the card. Now, reboot sans card and then shutdown again. Now, physically install card again (and using another PCI slot is a good idea) and boot back up. If wizard comes up, cancel it and install from the original installation CD (disregard next hardware error message), then reboot and you should be OK.

 

Ohhhhhh, my ASUS brothers! I would have gone the Premium route but, IIRC, it had only 2 PCI slots, instead of the 3 on the Deluxe (which seemed to be illogical to me). Gots to have my options. So...

Rock, deleting the errant device in Device Manager did the trick for the TV Card. All of my hardware is now installed and all 3 of my PCI slots are in use. Once I get iTunes going on my son's User Acct, I will pull my PCI Ati Rage card and put in the infamous MSI 7600GT PCIe card and see what happens. Miracles are not expected in this case as I am currently using my original A8N mobo.

I will give the newsgroup method a try. I was hoping to avoid having to manually subscribe to them all again. Can't fault me for hoping. I will keep you guys up to date.

I put everything back in my preferred order in Links, we'll see.

Besides using Knoppix, is there anyway to access the data on my old c drive? Right now I just get "access denied" when I try to access data. I tried making a user account on the new c drive with the same name but that didn't help.

After all that with my TV card, is it now obsolete with the change to DTV??

Some of the new ones are PCI-e x16. Can I use both a TV card and my graphics card on my A8N-SLI Deluxe? It has two slots for SLI. Would I just remove the SLI card in between the slots? If so, then I would lose the closest PCI slot, right??

I use a DVBT USB2 HDTV Receiver, gives me both digital and analog TV on my 22" LCD and I have a great picture.
Mind you I do not use the crappy little Rabbit Ears it is connected to the outdoor antenna.

The ASUS manual says that the PCIe x16 slot #2 (black) will function as a PCIe x1 slot when not used in SLI bridge mode. Does that mean that its slower than x16 but faster than a std PCI slot? It does not say anything about losing the closest PCI slot when PCIe x16 #2 is in use, so, I must have read that about other mobos while doing my original mobo shopping.

I gather than my TV card is now a techno-relic. The only stations that it picks up now are in Spanish or are official government DTV information channels. Hawk, I will ck out your card. What brand is it? Hauppauge's reviews are a bit spotty. Regarding the antenna...

no one warned me about this forum's tilt towards clairvoyance! . My computer set up is on an interior wall so the logistics of an outside antenna will take a little work... not that I have an issue with that. It will just have to wait a while.

Mind you this particular model might not work in your country.
I don't have a direct line to my external antenna I simply use a splitter at a convenient location to run one coax to the TV in the family room and one coax into my computer room with a wall mounted socket for the coax to the computer desk.
I have the software installed in 3 computers and therefore all 3 I can use to watch TV with by simply plugging in the USB receiver.
You could call it one of my toys (wife's expression).

 

I resisted HD for the longest time because I wasn't sure what was going to happen with my TV cards. Dumb me, on cable it doesn't matter (digital vs analog) because they do the converting and I can go with optical HD through Charter with a HD box and will still have basic cable through analog cards. This is a little different spin than the recent analog to digital conversion which has apparently caught Lar without cable, satellite or a digital converter.

I've got a ATI 9800 All-In-Wonder in an FX53 Box and my wife has a ATI 7500 AIW in her desktop but I put an ASUS HD card (regular PCI) in my Vista Ultimate Box. All three work pretty much the same because I still haven't coughed up the extra cash to add HD to my basic cable service and there's no way I'm going to marry a converter box to a computer. Again, this is a little different than the recent USA conversion from analog to digital broadcasting.

Not to worry, I'm told Congress is looking at legislation that will soon provide all residents with fee digital HD service at tax payer expense. Free food, free housing, free healthcare and free TV - God, you gotta love this country unless you're a taxpayer.

 

Me, too! For all of the work that I would have to do to bring an outside antenna to the computer, I could split one of my satellite feeds (yes, I DO have satellite ) and run a line over. But then I could only watch what is being watched at the source TV's converter box. Hmmm... choices. Maybe I'll run a coax from the antenna and see how well that works first.

Since I have satellite, I could possibly use my analog tuner card ...

I assume that you use a splitter before the cable box? Does that effect the signal quality? If it is before the box, I imagine that one just gets the basic local channels in their native "broadcasted" form.

Do you just use your TV card's channel tuner to select the channel?

I wonder if satellite also sends FM signals along with the TV signals...

Just a couple of brief passing comments.

re: TV card - I would expect others could shed more light on this but I don't use any cable boxes. Have stuck with basic service and have a distribution amplifier up in the attic which feeds multiple TV sets. As to hookups to computer TV cards (three in all), I have a 3 way splitter downstairs on one of my main TV feeds coming from the distribution amplifier and then run independent coax to each of the three cards. All channel switching, recording and controls are done through each computer. It is my understanding that if I ever go to digital optic cable service which is available to me, it will have no bearing on the stations I can receive with my TV cards unless I put a cable box(s) into play. At present, I have no plans to do so.

re: 7600 PCIe Video Card - Agatha Christie, Perry Mason, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Columbo, Kojak and the Rockster are all suspicious of its integrity. I believe "Sherlock" Clark and Hawk22 may have similar reservations. All are anxiously awaiting the results of your pending investigation.

 

In regards to loosing signal strengths by using splitters unless you have a top setup like Rock you can buy splitters that include a booster, that is the cheaper way especially when trying out a setup, but a two way split should be OK anyway.
Another thing to take into account when selecting a TV receiver is by using a card you can use MS Media Center, whereas by using a USB receiver Media Center will not work as it can not detect it (no hardware found), you rely on the supplied software only.

Well, it sounds like the Utlimate Investigative Panel (UIP) has a clear expectation of these events!! Remember, I am still upwind of my group, so the search for a working computer without ISA slots continues.

Sadly, since my local PC store chain closed, I no longer have such casual commercial contacts. The Geek Squad probably would not lift a finger without a minimum.

I tested my satellite feed to see if it sends basic channels without the box like cable does, but, alas, it does not. So, I will work on the outside antenna feed.... eventually.
