    Hi Ramona... :D

I've been trying NS7 for Mac... this is a good one!! I do believe they finally are getting right...

One thing new in the Mac version though is in the Messenger window, we never have been bothered by that "news" pane in the lower half before. We've got one now, but I've noticed that now we also have a "prefs.js" which can be opened in something like BBEdit, similar to Notepad.

What was the line to disable that thing again? I'd like to see if it works on Mac...

Also has anyone here had trouble when cutting and pasting a url into the location bar and hitting enter with it not going anywhere?

This is the first new version of NS that doesn't "take over" NS4.x... :D Just the shortcuts, have to use the main Communicator icon... I can even run both at the same time so long as I start the 4.x version first.

    Hey Dreambird!

My gosh but it's good to see you here, as you are sorely missed.

In the Windows Ver. there is a setting in Preferences to turn off the Mail Ad:
    Mail & Newsgroups
    Mail Start Page:
Disable: When Mail launches, show the start page in the message area.

Do you have that Preference? The line in prefs.js that we used for this in Communicator:
    user_pref( "mailnews.start_page.enabled ", false);
Can you use the user.js? If so, let me know.

Haven't had any problem with a cut/paste URL. As you know, first fix would be to clear Cache and History. I'll check on the Mac 7.0 NG and see what I can find out for you.

    Later,

    Ramona :D

    Thanks Ramona!

I did find the preference to turn off that news pane... duh!
Still just in the process of looking through everything carefully... I don't know about the Windows version, but I noticed yesterday that Netscape 7 had set the Cache on my Mac for 50mb by default...

We don't have a user.js... Is that taking the place of prefs.js? This is the first version of NS I've even seen a prefs.js in a Mac version, only had liprefs.js before.

Still looking for a reason why a pasted url won't go anywhere... it's not me having the problem, but one of the folks on the Mac board... he seems to be the only one whose come up with that problem... it's a mystery...

    Hi Dreambird,

This is what the user.js does, and is:

Netscape's new super-configuration file is a plaintext file called "user.js ". Netscape itself still uses the prefs.js like previous versions, but the 100% user-controlled user.js has precedence, that means any entry in user.js replaces any similar entry in prefs.js. Netscape on the other hand does not have the right to manipulate user.js, that means it will not be overwritten or changed by Netscape in any way. That's why changes to user.js can be made while Netscape 7 is running. User.js lives in your profile directory . Usually user.js has to be created using notepad or any other plaintext editor. Nearly all tips described here use the user.js, so you might as well create the file now.

    Holger Metzger

I have a list of Scripts to be added to the user.js on my web page. Also posted my own user.js file.

    More in email... non-Netscape :)

    Dreambird,

The cache is always set to 50mb by default. Perhaps it's someone's idea of a joke? ;)

If you put most of your non-profile specific options in the user.js file you will save yourself a lot of trouble when the time comes to make a new profile. I can have a new profile up an running with all my preferences in less than 5 minutes. Much easier than constantly resetting everything by hand.

The Mac version doesn't even "have" a user.js anywhere... so I assume this is something you create yourself? Or does the Windows version come with it?

I'm going to have to install the Windows version to check out the differences... I rarely use a PC anymore...
I suspect there's a lot more to the Windows version... the Mac full download is only about 19mb.

    Tranquilo...

50mb for a default Cache is either a joke or someone made a big mistake! :D

    Hey Dreambird,

Yes, the user creates the user.js, using Notepad, or any text editor. I too am impressed with 7.0. Mozilla isn't too shabby either, and I also enjoy using it to browse.

The Mac Ver. is 19 MB? You can get a Windows Streamline Ver. from SillyDog that is only 13 MB, including Mail. With a "Custom" install, Mail only, it boils down to 11,508 MB. Pretty ! Which reminds me, are you beta testing the Mac streamline?

50 MB for a default Cache is either a joke or someone made a VEWY BIG mistake! ;) :) :D

No, I haven't been testing a streamlined Mac version. No one ever got back to me about it... so I went ahead and installed the standard full download for Mac... there were more and more people using it on the board and I needed to get with it! ;)

I found it's not all that bad... it allows for a custom install and we don't have nearly the stuff that I see in your Windows install. No Java... Apple has it's own and it installed 2 MRJ plugins to cover that.

I find that you can even choose not to install the Mail if you don't want to... but it leaves a few niggly, annoying things behind... like a link for Address Books under Tools with gives a message that it can't find "bla-bla "... of course.

    7.0 Comments

7.0 does seem to have the bug that some pages won't render correctly, however visiting the netscape site I found some tids that said this was due to the site using non standard html.

    Like marquee, etc.

I have noticed the cut and paste bug under win 98. I upgraded from the 6.beta to the 6.2? to the 7. There are other times that netscape wont .. do anything.. not hung but can't visit a web site.

Exiting and reenter .. all is fine.

I love the fact that deleting and importing bookmarks work - but find the implementation not as good as the browser product put out by satan. I do miss the ability to run rules immediately - or perhaps I just don't know how to do that.

The general word is that the JVM implementation is 2x as fast as netscape 6. Generally page presentation is 10% faster than the unholy browser.
