USB ports freeze computer

    I have a compaq presario and running windows xp home edition.
    usb ports freeze computer totally when trying to use.
    have done everthing possible in device manager.
    I have seen many forums on this problem but still no fixes yet.
    Anyone????????

    Sadly, this is a difficult issue to solve and there are numerous solutions. I have a long list of these but here are just two you may not have tried:

    1. Remove static electricity by turning the computer off and remove the mains lead (also remove the battery if it’s a laptop). Press and hold the on/off button on the computer for ten seconds. Whilst the computer is turned off, discharge the static from the actual USB ports by touching them whilst touching something metallic. Plug in the lead (and laptop battery) and start the computer as normal. You may have to reset the system date/time on a laptop. Also, it can be useful to clean the USB ports and the individual device connectors using a lint-free cloth.

    2. With no devices plugged in, download/run USBview here It doesn’t need installing. Click on an item in the left pane and look for Connection Status in the right pane. If any USB ports are missing, go to Control Panel > Switch to Classic View > Add New Hardware and let the wizard find them.

    First of all thank you. I had numerous of people look @ my problem but u r the only one who responded.
    I did the static thing and the usb review....nothing.
    The usb review read fine just said no device connected.

    is your machine still underwarranty ask support from compaq tech...and i think there's an online chat support for compaq..just search the web for it.. anyway..try this one from MS hope it will help...
