    Greetings everybody

I'm going to be reformatting a DELL DIMENSION 5150. I have a dell monitor 1707FP.

    1) What drivers do I need to have when I reinstall Windows XP?
    2) What order should the drivers in 1) be installed?

    Thank you kindly,
    GEO.

What exactly are you gonna use to reinstall Windows?
If recovery CD, or recovery partition, all drivers should be reinstalled automatically.
If Windows CD, then you may need some drivers. After reinstall, go to Device manager, and see what's missing. Then go to Dell site, enter your service tag number, and get needed drivers.

If I need the drivers I would get them before formatting... at minimum I get the network driver, you may need that to be able to get back on line :)

You're right Broni I have a Windows CD. I went to the dell site and never noticed a tiny link before where you can get all the drivers you want for your computer. I did not know what a 'service tag' number is but on the back of my computer I found it under a dusty sticker, I entered it and the dell site listed all these drivers for me ready to download (thank you!) However it did not tell me what order to install them. Their tech dept was no help since I am not under warranty right now (dell canada asked me for $59.99 to help me since Im not in warranty--I am not kidding!).

Thanks Arie the network driver is about the only one I am familiar with. I also have all the programs lined up (security progs, printer cd and others). When I bought this computer I did it only for writing/printing and online research surfing and have never reformatted in a year, pushing aside learnig how to do it (plus us non-computer savvy types are freaked out by tech procedures as you pros know). I finally decided it needs to be done and found the procedure to reformat on here (not as difficult as I imagined) and am confident in that but they don't tell you the order of drivers. Somebody in the office said the order is important. My impulse was just to load everything missing willy nilly from the dell site after the windows cd installed its items.

By the way I've never joined any forums before but I think this will become a favorite site for me, thank you for all your help.

You may have gotten a CD with the computer that has all the drivers on it. I can't remember what it's labeled but it does say "drivers" on it somewhere. If you have that disk, use it after Windows is back up and running.

On that disk there will be "System" drivers. Install those first. After that, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference. At least, I've just installed the rest in whatever order I remember them. ;)

There is one more option for you, free DriverMax: http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/
It'll save all your current drivers, and then, it'll reinstall all of them for you after reformat.

As for the order, usually, the chipset driver goes first, and after that, it really doesn't matter.
