I am running Windows XP Pro 2002. A light blue line has suddenly appeared at the top of my computer screen & I can't get rid of it. No matter what is displayed, the line is always there. When I use Internet Explorer it freezes up more than usual but I don't know if that is related to the line or just a coincidence. The line has no verifiable affect on system performance - it's just annoying because it crosses out words. I have tried rebooting, logging off, restart, etc.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

What sort of screen are we talking of - CRT or flatscreen ?

I would suspect a partial monitor failure, but suggest an uninstall/re-install of the graphics drivers as an essential first step.

As this is a Hardware problem, IMO, I have moved your thread to that forum.

If you have problems with IE - not related to the screen problem IMO - please start a new thread in the Internet Explorer forum and state which version you are using - 6,7 or 8.

First determine what your graphics are - either look in Device Manager > Display Adaptors or download and install SIW and look under Hardware > Devices > Display Adaptors

Then go to the manufacturer's website and locate the latest drivers for your card - if perchance you have an nVidia based card they have an automated driver detector - http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us. I cannot speak for other manufacturer's being totally nVidia.

Save the driver to your hard drive.

Uninstall the graphics software through Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

On reboot the Found New Hardware Wizard should pop up - close it and navigate to the location where you saved the driver file and run it.

A test you could use is to do a printscreen. Press the Print Screen key then go to Start -> Accessories -> Paint -> Edit menu -> Paste. Is the blue line on the image? I just wonder if the monitor itself needs to be adjusted. The other thing I look at is the resolution. You might be using a widescreen resolution for a square montor or visa versa. If you have the instruction manual for the monitor, read there or find the model number which will be on a label on the back of it.

I went into the paint menu as suggested & the blue line is not on the image. It is through the blue screen above the task menu. The part of the screen where the paint icon, & the words "untitled" & "paint" appear. The line runs right through the icon & the words all the way across the page. I haven't had time to try your other suggestions but I appreciate the help. I will let you know if anything works.
