Arie posted about the power cuts too. I suspect your hard drive was reading/writing when the power dropped out and the heads may have collided with the platters.

Check out the drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic software.....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

Was the computer still switched on when the power was restored?

Most disk diagnostic software can be run from a bootable CD - see the appropriate site for details or post the drive make here.

You will need to check that the boot order set in BIOS is CD-ROM > Floppy, if fitted > Hard Drive.

When the computer starts to boot you should see the POST screen (Power On Self Test) - white text on a black ground. There is generally a line at the bottom of the screen to Press xx to enter Setup - that is the BIOS. XX may be Del or F1, possibly something else.

It woukd be helpful if you would post the make of the drive and the file you have downloaded - I will then be better placed to guide you further.

Asus do not make hard drives - what.exe file are you referring to?

To run disk diagnostics from the manufacturer of the drive you must first determine the manufacturer - as the computer will not boot you will need to physically look at the drive.

Alternatively if you post the make/model of the computer I may be able to find out from the manufacturer's web site.

BTW - I will not be logged on between 8 pm and 11 pm BST.

    You require ....

Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)

Although there are instructions on the page a little clarification ....

You do not burn the .iso file - an image file, direct to CD. To burn an ISO image to CD you select in your burning software 'Burn Image' - in Nero (7) this is under Recorder > Burn Image or under SmartStart - Backup > Burn Image to Disc. Other burning software should have similar options. This produces a bootable CD - see line 5. on the page above for further details.

Sorry to say that indicates that the drive is defective, see .....

    Diagnostic Error Codes

Scroll to the last but one line of the first table.

Oh dear - that implies that you do not maintain a current backup of important data :(

All is not lost - when you have a new hard drive installed install the old drive as a slave. The odds are that it will be recognised and you will be able to copy all or most of your data across to the new drive. I do hope so :)

A sudden power out when the computer is running can cause damage if, as I posted earlier - the drive was writing/reading at the time of the power outage. If that is not the cause important to bear in mind that a drive can fail in days, weeks, months or years - hence the need for a current backup.

    Code 0223 reads ....
Generally speaking if a disk has been repaired this implies that the bad areas or sectors have been marked as such and will not be used in future - it does not imply that the data in those sectors has been recovered.

As you have nothing to lose I would boot to the Recovery Console and run the commands fixmbr and fixboot

If this fails to resolve the problem I would again attempt a repair of XP.
