    On windows XP, Windows Vista etc. I have always moved all my personal document, picture and music etc. folders, onto a different drive, so that if my system crashes, I don't lose all my personal information . can anybody tell me how I do this on windows seven?

    I have already tried to adjust copying across the user directory, from drive C two drive D, all this started running into error messages. I have also tried copying the directory with my name on it, but this files are running two error messages.

    I've also tried this;

    The pictures folder, the documents folder, music etc. are all inside a folder called mark, which is a sub directory of the user's, mark and public are in this directory. I want to be able to move the mark directory, or when I click on mark in the start menu, it will take me to the wrong hard drive. It will take me to C:\users\mark instead of D:\mark where are my documents will be..

    When I right click on my documents, pictures, music etc. I can move the location like you suggest, but I cannot do this on the mark folder, because the option is not available when you right click and go into the properties. See the picture below.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Just felt I had better than warn people, that solution, is not a solution. In fact for a short while, I thought I was going to have to reload my machine. I think I have managed to restore the user files now, to an earlier version from this morning.

    One thing I haven't mentioned, is that there is a little padlock on all the user directories. The one called Mark has a padlock on it, and the the new user I created, temporary, also had a padlock on it.

    I've had no problems changing the Users folder in Vista, but haven't tried it in Windows 7. I only changed the location of the My Documents folder to another location (2nd HD).

    this IS the solution

    To move a User folder (e.g. Documents) in Vista or Windows 7, right click on it>Properties>Location>Move.

    If you do it this way Vista/Windows 7 knows where your files are and makes the appropriate "adjustments" for you.

    Yes, that is how I moved my My Documents folder... but this thread was about moving the whole \Users\ folder.... which is something I haven't done, and won't give you the 'move' option in its properties section.
