I have no sound card but use the Realtek AC'97 Audio built into the Gibabyte mother board. I have the volume controls turned to max on all the XP sound settings to get what should be medium volume. I just installed a new Acer monitor with built in speakers and to get just medium volume had to adjust the monitors sound slider to max. The speaker connection is plugged directly into the green sound outlet on the back of the computer. Any ideas?
    TIA - Dennis

There are quite a few places you might have to check. You don't mention the media player. If you have the AC'97 audio manager installed it will have a set of controls (if you only have the drivers, it will run on Windows Volume Controls). Look in Control Panel (Classic View).

Check in the monitor's manual, I wouldn't expect the speakers to require the signal to be amplified, but maybe it does. You may need amplify the signal.

I marked this thread as solved, which I'm going to do by going out this morning and buying a set of powered speakers. I had a set of 12 year old Trust speakers, which the volume control finally died on, and they really spoiled me for good sound. I wanted to save desktop space so decided to get my new monitor with built in speakers. I just wasn't prepared for how really bad the sound is, which isn't helped by Acer building the speakers in at the back of the flat panel with the sound hitting the wall first. TA
