    Hi all,

I have a DSL connection and uptil now i was connecting the DSL modem with my desktop directly.

I decided to go wireless for my iphone and laptop and bought the Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router. Now one wire goes to the desktop from the modem and the other into the wireless router for other accessories.

I have kept the connection type as 'Assigned by DHCP' and other than that just selected the WPA - Personal as the security type. Using TKIP i selected a network key.

The problem is that although i connect fine to my new wireless network, however, i cannot go online. My desktop works fine and if i remove the router and connect the cable directly into the laptop the internet works fine then.

What could be the problem? Even without any security still the internet will not work through the wireless router.

If I understand you correctly, it sounds as though you are using the old modem as well as the new router.

I don’t know your equipment without looking it up, but most DSL wireless routers include a modem.

    What brand dsl modem?

Your modem most likely has a router built into it, setup to distribute to one single computer.

To use the second router (the linksys), you need to put the dsl modem into Bridged mode and configure the linksys to handle the dsl authentication and addressing for multiple computers, incliuding the iPhone.

Tell me the brand and model number of the modem and I will tell you how to put the modem into Bridged mode.

Sounds to me like the PC is doing authentication.

Tony he needs to post the ipconfig for the desktop but I don't remember the command to save as txt.

If the DSL is handling NAT and DHCP I would use the Linksys as a AP/Switch by turning off DHCP and not using the WAN port.

With dsl, it's best to let the router handle dhcp and put the modem in Bridge mode, which disables the modem dhcp. The reason is that most dsl modems do have dhcp but are setup to assign only 1 private ip address. Using the router as a switch/ap may or may not work because the modem may not assign pribvate ips to more than 1 comp.

Most dsl wifi routers do not include a dsl modem, they only include the cabability to do the dsl authentication (PPoE Dialing). The linksys wrt54g series does not include a dsl modem.

Your possibly correct. But some of those Modems are a challenge to get in Bridge for the average user. That's why I had chose the easy road first. :)

Agreed. I keep documentation for various dsl modems' bridge mode setup because I have to do it often for my clients with business dsl lines. The newer dsl modens make it easier now to configure bridged mode, usually 2-4 clicks.

Well problem solved. Wireless networks aren't supposed to be complex. Just did a reset on the router and used the enclosed CD to reconfigure the router.

    Thanks all.
