Hi Everyone, I had a hard drive crash so I replaced it and reinstalled win 2000 pro. I use starband sattellite internet and previousley connected to the modem with a usb cable, it worked pretty good but knowing it should be more stable with ethernet I changed since I was into it. Now I get many web pages that take a long time to load or never load, sometimes a refresh works or clearing the cache before a reload. I don't know if I have missed something in the settings.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi ataxia162,

A couple of things: What browser are you using? Have you tried to hook it back up the way it was? If so, any change; or are the pages still slow to load?

Hi jpChris, I have tried both IE and Firefox, sometimes when one isn't doing well the other is a little better. I have been avoiding going back to the USB because if I use that I can't use any other USB devices. It does seem a little better today. It could just be an issue with Starband but I'm not sure yet.

    Hi ataxia162,

Not clear on that. Do you only have one USB port? Or that when you use it for the web all your other USB ports are unusable? Give it a try and see whether it's the problem.

It might be "space junk" in a lower orbit that just hasn't moved away yet. :p

If you're still experiencing problems when you read this, a call to tech support to find out what's going on may be in order. It may be something as simple as resetting your modem.

    Hi jpChris,

According to starband if you use the usb cable, any other usb device will conflict with it. It does, I tried connecting a printer and it wouldn't install till I disconnected the modem then the modem wouldn't work with the printer installed.

I had called tech support and had them reset the modem before I posted on it. I have found their tech support to not be much help usually. I will give it the weekend and see how it goes before I try the usb again. I've had a few other issues with the computer since the reinstall, mouse took a dump and had to replace it a little while ago.

    Thanks

    Hi ataxia162,

I'd suggest running CCleaner and see if there's anything pointing to the wrong direction. One caveat, though, when it offers to save any changes, do it. Rename the CCleaner generated file with the area you were working on; i.e., "Obsolete Software" will give you something like cc_2234595.reg. Rename it Obsolete Software.reg so you know what it means. And don't do a bunch of stuff all at once. Do a few things at a time to make sure there's no problems. If you've accidentally deleted something, you can always undo it.

p.s. If no joy from tech support, ask to have it escalated to someone whom knows what they're doing. I've found that most techs have a sheet of paper in front of them with 5 answers on it. Don't make no nevermind nohow what you ask, you're gonna get one of the 5 answers "” even if it has nothing to do with your problem.

    Hi jpChris,

I just downloaded CCleaner. I've never used it before so I'll have to read up on it. IE seems to be working much faster than FF at the moment. What would you suggest (only checking or removing the things related to FF?). Is the registry part safe to run?

I know about tech support, my son used to do tech support for HP. When they start telling me to do things I usually say "Let me tell you what I've done and you tell me what I missed" The call gets escalated on the spot usually because they know it's over their head.

Update: I installed Opera and it worked much faster so I was comparing those settings with the settings in FF. Opera had set the proxy settings for http://127.0.0.1 and port 9877 so I manually set the proxy in FF for that and so far it has loaded the pages that were slow without any problems.

    Thanks for the help

    Hi ataxia162,

I'm not the "I told you so" type, but I told you so. :p

Excellent! I'm glad you're up and running again. Sometimes all it takes is a little digging and comparing to find the problem — and you found it in the "settings" department. By the by, if you're looking for a Browser Suite (has a built-in e-mail client) I'd recommend SeaMonkey. Just my preference.

As far as CC goes, yes, read up on it. But, like I said, only do a few things at a time, rename the "CC Save" file to what you're working on, and save to the Desktop. There's plenty of people here familiar with CC that'll help you. If you're unsure of anything, Google it first; if no joy, post here.

    Hi ataxia162,

You're welcome. I'm just glad the problem was solved. And, you're right, CCleaner is similar, but it's my Cleaner of preference. :)
