    Hi all,

I finally got XP SP2 installed (after 2 hours, with a MS tech on the phone with me; Restores; deletes; etc.) and my HD is now over 1GB larger; although I suspect they're restore points.

So I ran CCleaner and there were about 30 entries under "Uninstaller ", all referring to $NTUninstallKBxxxxxxx$ and CC said it was in the ARPCache.

As an aside, in Control Panel, it used to list all the KB updates, patches, etc., but since SP2, none of them are listed anymore. However, under Windows, they're still there as well as under the $hf_mig$.

Anyway, is it safe to let CC clean the uninstaller reference issues? And what about all the $NTUninstallKB$? Can I delete them?

$NTUninstallKBxxxxxxx$ are the uninstallers for the updates that are uninstallable - if you are sure that you do not want to uninstall the updates they can go.
SP2 is a rollup of all the updates issued since SP1 so I would not expect to see any except those installed subsequent to SP2. I guess you have run Windows update since installing SP2?

BTW - you do have the 'Show Updates' box checked at the head of Add/Remove ?? The default is unchecked.

    Hi Pete,

Some of these files go back to 2003. Uh, "uninstallers for updates that are uninstallable" Then why is there an uninstaller for an uninstallable update?

Not yet "” I finally just got it installed. :)

I don't see the box you mentioned in Add\Rem.

I will re-phrase - $NTUninstallKBxxxxxxx$ are the uninstallers for the updates that may be uninstalled.

    Hi Pete,

    Oh that box

I'll definitely do that. I mentioned that my HD is about 1GB larger than when I began: the $hf_mig$ and $NTUninstallKBxxxxxxx$ files\folders total about 500MB and the SP2 CD is 475MB "” so I guess that explains the extra MB's.

I appreciate you baby sitting me on this (even though it should have been done about 5 years ago) and if I don't experience any problems after a few days, I'll delete them.

    Update

    Hi Pete,

I wasn't comfortable just deleting the $hf_mig$ files, nor the $NTUninstallKB$ files, either. So, what I did was do a cut\paste to my E:\ partition as a "just in case ".

I ran CCleaner again, deleted the registry references, etc., (saved them to the Desktop, naturally) ran NTRegOptimizer (which defragged it by 22%), ran DeFraggler and Lo' and Behold, the drive was 3.7GB's, but after doing the above, it's now 2.4GB's — which is the size I estimated it should be after the SP2 install. :D

A very small thing, though, is that in Add\Remove Programs, the "SP2 Uninstall" isn't there anymore. I'm not planning on uninstalling it anyway, so it's a "no big deal" thing, right?

    (and, Thanks, again, Pete)

No big deal, but I wonder if the reason is that you have moved the uninstall file to E:\ .

    Hi Pete,

Now that you mention it, it seems logical that's where it is. :p
