Java update from version 13 to 14 giving error in control panel

    I took a Java version 14 update the other night, I clicked on the java icon in the control panel today and got:

    "java control panel system cannot find the registry key specified ".

    "Hkey_Local_Machine\software\javasoft\java run time enviroment\1.60_13 "

    Went to the registry and the version 14 key it is there.

    Went to WINDOWS\system32\ Javacpl.cpl it still shows version 13 there.

    Went to MSI folder: FROMVERSION 13

    What do I need to change for the Java icon in the cpl to look for the right key?

    Please be specific. I am new at this, but think I can do it.

    When I took the update they offered some sort of MSN bar for java but I was sleepy and declined and went to bed.

    It sounds like you have a corrupted install .....

    Add/Remove Programs - uninstall Java 14

    Download the full copy from here .....

    JRE 6 Update 14

    Then download JavaRa and Check 'Remove older versions' - this will clean the system of older versions - which are not uninstalled automatically when updating.

    BTW - I edited your post to give the right file designation .....

    WINDOWS\system32\Javacpl.cpl

    How far is this far ? :) - I don't recognise the dialogue you have posted ......

    On the URL I posted click the download button against JRE 6 Update 14

    Select Platform - Windows - Language - Multilanguage and check the check box to agree .... > Continue ....

    Click on the file name under Windows Offline Installation and you should see the download dialogue - save the file to disk and then run.

    Ok Pete, I got Java 6 v14 installed and working, but I do not see Check 'Remove older versions' at JavaRa.

    I also clicked on the Java icon on the cpl and still the same thing :

    "java control panel system cannot find the registry key specified ".

    "Hkey_Local_Machine\software\javasoft\java run time enviroment\1.60_13

    You need to download JavaRa, unzip it and run the .exe file. The first dialogue you see is shown in the attachment below ....

    See if that helps.

    Please download [color= "#FF8C00"]JavaRa[/color] to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
    • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
    • Accept any prompts.
    • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
    • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

    Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

    Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

    It's working, past the test fine but keep getting the cpl error though. Can't open Java from the control panel. I looked in system32 javacpl.cpl under properties the version there is still 6.o.130.3. but Java.exe there is version 14

    Under Program Files: java\jre6\bin javacpl.cpl control panel extension properties it is version 14

    I need java icon in the control panel to look for version 14 instead of 13 from the control panel.

    I'll wait to see if broni has any further ideas, but short of brutalising the install - which would probably foul everything up I have no further suggestions.

    As Java is working are you in desperate need of the Java Console?

    When you used JavaRa, did you use 'Remove older versions', first?

    Pete, no, do not need the Java Console. Want to know why the icon is not working though when it should.

    Broni, I first uninstalled java6 v13 from add remove. DL Java6 v14, then Java Ra to remove older versions.

    Everything I could see in the registry, program files, changed to version 14, but not Windows\system32\details javacpl.cpl\properties\view\version 6.013.003
