    Hi All,
windows updated me to SP2 a couple of days ago. Everything went well except I noticed that any of my non-windows applications are missing their sounds.
All windows apps are o.k., so are cd's and DVD's.
Anyone out there who might know the answer?
    Thanks for your help.
    Axel

Hi axel. The first thing I would try would be to update your sound drivers to the latest version. What kinds of non-windows applications get no sound? Games, programs, etc?

    Hi Evan Omo,
unless SP2 overwrites existing drivers I think there is no need for an update, as all sounds worked perfectly well before the SP2 installation.
Programs are Quicken, Card Games, Games etc.
    Cheers Axel

I have heard that other people have had problems with their sound not working after updating to SP2. I would at least check to see if there is an update available. It wouldn't hurt. Also take a look in device manager. Click Start and type device manager in the search box and then click on device manager. Are there any yellow exclamation marks next to any devices?

    Hi Evan Omo,
no yellow exclamation marks. According to your earlier advice I checked the drivers by looking at the event viewer. You were right. SP2 does change drivers of non-microsoft apps back to microsoft generic drivers. I must say I find this rather intrusive and disturbing. Why can't Microsoft leave things alone when they are in perfect order. I am thinking about switching off the automatic update facility.
Anyway, thanks very much for your kind help. Problem is solved.
    Cheers Axel

Great. I do agree with you that there are certain things that I don't agree with which Microsoft does. It does make me wonder why Microsoft wants to change everything all the time even though things have been running fine. I actually switched back to XP because when I had Vista it was to much of a resource hog and it wasn't as stable as XP. Anyway I'm happy to hear that you were able to get your problem resolved. :)
