[Resolved] Alternate Data Stream Attatched To C:\Windows Folder

Thanks in advance! I believe I am following everything in your faq, EXCEPT when I went to dl DDS, there were two options: 1 file with an extension of .pif, & one with an extension of .scr. I apologize, I will not run either an .scr or a .pif file unless someone confirms that those really are the extension & the DDS server has not been hijacked.

A slightly different version of this post was originally posted on the Maximum PC site; the only reply was someone offering to try to contact AMD; they failed in their attempt just as I did.
http://www.maximumpc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=970522#970522
I have posted there that I have posted here per your faq.

Here's the situation:

The other night Spy Bot Found (& other programs confirmed) an ads attached to the C:\Windows folder. It's named BAD62133E0206B3B
The MD5 Hash is D41D8CD98F00B204E9800998ECF8427E which per Google is a hash for an empty file. This one is 24k. I was able to view the file contents with Adsspy, it's All computer code, no text.

The other XP SP3 pc in my network does NOT have the ads (or the Catalyst driver/control center mentioned below). I have scanned with Pavark, Reg Run Partizan, Adaware, & Avast; none of which notify me of this ads. Originally Spybot, Adsspy, Highjack this & Rootaliser could all see it, but are not able to state if it is malicious or not. Highjack this & Spybot no longer see the ads; adsspy & rootaliser do. I've also been able to save the ads as a separate .bin file & no scanner sees it as a virus.

It's date stamp is identical to a recent install of the Catalyst 9.5 update for a Radeon 3450 card, & while I don't know the exact time of the Catalyst install, it's at minimum within an hour of the ADS time stamp; I'm starting to assume it's likely the same time.

I dl'd the Catalyst update directly from AMD's site & scanned it for virus. I did turn off Reg Run's protection during the install so the driver could modify registry keys & not cause the install to fail.

I would love to ask AMD if the ADS tagged along with the Catalyst driver & if it's necessary, but every attempt to register on AMD's site errors out on both FF & Opera. If I fill out AMD's email form, it sends me a bounce that I need to register before they will accept an email from me. Then no matter what I try, the registration form will not accept any password I've attempted.

My Question is: does anyone know if Catalyst comes with this ADS & if the ADS is necessary? I have several programs that state they can remove the ADS, but they all say to make sure it's malicious before removal or removal could hose my system. In general, how can I find out if an ads is malicious, necessary or neither of the above?

The only sign of any potential problem on this system is from about a month ago, logging into Pay Pal started causing browser crashes on all 3 browsers unless cookies are first deleted, but that precedes this by several weeks. There are NO other signs of virus. I scan often & am a pretty safe surfer.

Thanks for any suggestions........

Both downloads are safe, and they come with scr. and pif extensions.

Thank you for the assurance. Here's the logs. As an fyi, I could not get the scr to run even with all security disabled. Also as an fyi, Reg Run saw dds.pif as a trojan/virus, but I ran it anyway.

Thanks in advance!

One other bit of info: the log below shows the time I installed the ATI driver. I went to check the ADS to to see if the time stamp was identical. Unfortunately, the written to/changed date time stamp has changed from 5/30 to 6/9, probably from when i was running all the scans on the ads.

Print these instructions out.

NOTE. If any of the programs listed below refuse to run, try renaming executive file to something else; for instance, rename hijackthis.exe to scanner.exe

***VERY IMPORTANT! Make sure, you update Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes before running the scans.***

STEP 1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes ". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates ". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
* Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET

Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

* Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
* Click Scan your Computer... button.
* Click Scanning Preferences/Control Center... button.
* Under General and Startup tab, make sure, Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts option is UN-checked.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
- Close browsers before scanning.
- Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

* Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.

Broni, thank you again very much for your help. The 4 logs are below. A couple comments that may help.......

1. The trojan that Malwarebytes said it found was another ads attached to a folder I created called C:\a. I use that folder for dvd rips.

2. Both ads (C:\a & C:\Windows) are still on the machine per foldalyser. The program that first found the ads on Windows (ADS Spy) can NOT see the ads on C:\a.

3. Don't know if this means anything, but soon after installing Malwarebytes Reg Run came up & said that something had modified the run key to enable Dell Online support (DSCA.exe) which i previously disabled, & at the same time that something had tried to disable ATI2MDXX.exe, which relates to the recently installed Catalyst driver. I chose to roll back those changes.

4. On reboot after running malwarebytes, Reg Run flagged "file missing" on jyeq.sys that GMER also states is missing. I assume it's something to do with Malwarebytes?

5. Haven't mentioned this before, the pc in question is my newest. It's on a home network with an older XP home SP3 machine & a Win 98 SE machine. The 98 machine has shown no issues, the other XP machine shares the Pay Pal crashing issue I mentioned earlier, but no other noticeable issues.

EDIT: 6. I just took a quick look at the 2nd XP box with Spybot's Foldalyzer. It appears that EVERY folder on that machine has 2 ADS attached. I HOPE there's a good explanation.......

Logs are in next 4 posts.

I've read your comments...

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
2. Close any open browsers.
3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
• Close any open browsers.
• WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
• Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
• If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

Here's new logs. I had some difficulty turning off Reg Run. I disabled watch dog, but it still asked my permission before allowing Combofix to run 2 scripts. I don't know how to turn that part off. One other comment: All folders on this machine also now have 1 ads that vary in size from 244k, 256k , 284k & have the attribute "security ", I'm wondering if this has to do with patch Tuesday? The original 24 k ads on the Windows folder appears to be gone. Foldalyzer is seeing the "security" ADS's, Ad Spy is not.

One other comment: Combofix stated it installed a recovery console that I would start seeing on every boot. On reboot, it did NOT come up.

Logs to follow.

I see now that combo fix deleted the Windows ads. Thank you!

Questions:
1. Any idea just what I had? Any potential information theft consequences?
2. Any idea how i got it so I don't repeat the behavior?
3. Which of the programs you've had me run (if any) should i run on the other xp pc?

FYI, my security is
Hardware firewall in router
Windows firewall (xp)
Conseal Signal 9 Firewall (Win 98)
Avast Free
Reg Run Gold
PSI
Spybot immunization
I also have numerous spyware & av available for 1 time scans
No script add on on Forefox

Recovery Console was installed, and it's option is shown on startup only for a split second, so you just didn't notice :)

Your problem was most likely related to a trojan (inst.exe): http://www.threatexpert.com/files/inst.exe.html, which was removed by Combofix.

While I'm looking at HJT log....

Uninstall Combofix:

Go Start > Run
Type in:
combofix /u
Note the space between the "combofix" and the "/u "
Restart computer.

==========================================================

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
• Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
• Accept any prompts.
• Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
• Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

Did you, at some point, uninstall Dell Support Center, because I can see just 1 of its services running?

==================================================================

1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

3. Put checkmarks next to the following HijackThis entries:

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

4. You may also checkmark following entries (these are unnecessary startups; no actual programs will be removed):

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
- O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware] C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe /install /silent (unless you have paid version)
- O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (reboot)] "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe" /runcleanupscript (unless you have paid version)
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [EPSON Stylus C120 Series] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_FATICCA.EXE /FU "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\E_S90.tmp" /EF "HKCU "

5. Click on Fix checked button.

6. Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders.

7. Delete following files/folders (if present):
Note. If deletion doesn't work, attempt it in Safe Mode - restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears.

- ALCMTR.EXE from C:\Windows

8. Restart computer.

9. Post new HijackThis log.

Thank you again! From your link, that appears to just be a games password stealer? I'm not a gamer; am i likely to be in any danger from id theft or other password theft?

Will follow other suggestions; would you suggest also running any of these security programs on my other xp machine, or should i just look for inst.exe?

Will follow highjack this suggestion & post. I manually stopped Dell Support center from running with Greatis Reg Run (wonderful program, been using it for many years). I am wondering from the logs if i only partially disabled, though.

After removing combofix, a reference came 2x up on reboot to a missing "catchme.sys" file. A quick Google seems to show that some feel it's a trojan keylogger & some believe it's part of combofix?

Since i had a game password trojan, & it appeared at the same time that I downloaded the Catalyst driver./system from AMD's site i am suspecting that the official Catalyst release on AMD's server had the trojan come along with it. Teach me to shut off security during install (though i did scan the .exe before installing).

Anyone who dl'd Catalyst 9.5 on or near 5/29/09 may want to check your pc with a fine tooth comb. Avast did NOT catch the infection. full file name is "9-5_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.exe "
