    Hey,

My old computer has Windows 2000 Pro.

The computer works fine in safe mode but reboots before you can login in during regular boot up.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Wil

    While in Safe Mode....

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
    msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

    Click on Startup tab.
    Click Disable all

    Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
    Click Disable all.

    Click OK.
    Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

    Same problem?

Note. "msconfig" is not present by default in Win 2K, but you can get it here: http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm

Thanks Broni for the info and the link.

I used CCleaner to disable all the startup services, but tried msconfig to double check all serices were off.

Rebooted the computer and it still reboots... :(

I have all startup services off at the moment and it still restarts at the login screen.

Another choice I was thinking was too reinstall Windows 2000. Can the OS be restored like Windows XP?

A reinstall "on top" of the current Windows installation should preserve most user settings & files.

But I'd try to figure out why a normal startup doesn't work.

Try creating a new account & see if that works in normal mode.

    Thanks Arie,

Great idea, but the computer restarts even before I get through entering the password and logging in.

    Thanks

My initial assessment was that there was a bad diode (s) on the mainboard and tested the memory and both tested fine. The problem continued so I replaced the mainboard and the problem still exists.

I guess, the only hardware left...
    Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunatelly, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Thanks for the advice Broni and Arie.

The system is repaired and back up and running. Looks like the end results were a bad power supply had corrupted some of the files in Windows. I replaced the power supply and did a Windows repair and the files were repaired.
