I have two problems with IE8, but since they happened a month or so apart I suspect they're not connected, and shall create two separate threads. The other will be called "Open in a new tab/a new window - it won't! ".

On a site I am managing as substitute for the regular person on leave, one page is corrupted. I force-refreshed it until my fingers were numb, and then put in a formal support request. To my amazement, the support guys came back and said the page looked fine to them. I happened to be going on a short trip, so I dropped in to several internet cafés and used three different browsers (mine's IE8), and sure enough it looked fine everywhere. When I got back home, the page was still corrupt on my machine, and I can't work out why.

The page is http://ukinholysee.fco.gov.uk/en/our-office-in-holy-see/ambassador/ , The corruption is as follows: in the main central panel there should be three "promos" for child pages: "Career History ", "HM Ambassador's Speeches & Articles" and "Previous Ambassadors ". The last two are fine. But the first, "Career history ", has split itself into two parts, the box with the two-word headline and, separately, the explanatory text. The explanatory text comes up in a separate box, instead of under the headline as in the correct layout of the other two boxes. This means I now have four (instead of three) promo boxes in that panel.

I can't reproduce this problem on any other machine/browser, so it must be my machine that's at fault. Since they can't reproduce the error, the support guys can't help me either.

    Grateful for any comment/advice.

I see exactly what you describe :) In compatibility mode I see it as it should be - 3 boxes - as Steve suggested.

Add the URL to Compatibility View Settings under the Tools dropdown.

It's not your machine, it is their coding ;)

In Firefox, the headline text Career History is missing.

Many thanks, Pete, Steve and Arie - yep, that solved it. I hadn't discovered that compatability mode yet. I'll tell the guys on the support desk what you told me and it'll be up to them to fix it.
Again and as ever, WindowsBBS has the answer. I'm very grateful.
