Hi Folks, this evening I went overto a friends house to Install Norton Antivirus 2000 (this is what I have she doesn't have one right now) on her pc for her, and everytime I try to get the installation started it keeps closing. I tried again and again and the same thig keeps happening as I go through the tabs to be checked off for what I need installed and so on it closes off. I was wondering if her pc might be corrupted with a virus or why may this be happening?
    Thanks in advance.

Did you try installing in Safe mode? What methods are you using to start the process?

    Not sure what to do.

I may need some help. How do I install in safe mode? All that I did was insert the CD and proceeded to try to install, but as I said it kept closing on me. Not to good at this stuff so any suggestionsor help will be well appreciated.

I was readng windows help and noticed that it said that I will not have access to CD Rom drives if I start in safe mode, which would mean that I won't be able to install Norton? patiently awaiting a reply.

    Hi mich2mom
Before you do the install, do a ctrl/alt/del...and endtask on everything but systray and explorer..and try again.

    mich2mom,

Sorry, I had forgotten about the CD-Rom drive in safe mode. If Daizy's suggestion doesn't help, try this. Insert your Norton disk and exit the install screen. Go to My Computer and right click on the CD-ROM drive. Click explore and double-click on the Setup icon. Hopefully, that will get you going. If not, post back.

she doesn't have one right now)

Yes, it could be a Virus causing problems.

If not done already, I would suggest going to the site below.

    Housecall

Hello to all. I am happy to report that I did go to Housecall and a virus was found but after that I still did do as Daizy suggested and I got Norton on. While setting Norton up for installation though I was informed that the uninstall cannot be set up or something like that and that we might not be able to unstall it(if we so desired). Anyone knows why that might be?

Thank you all so much for your time and help. It is truly appreciated.:)

Well that is at least in part good news.

Wait for others to reply as I myself have been VERY LUCKY and have not had to deal with a Virus.

But the problem may still be Virus related. Some Viruses do damage to many files.

Also it may be due to part of the Old failed install may still exist.

If you could let us know what Virus was found it may help others to come up with some ideas.

Now that you have NAV installed, it might be a good idea to make sure it is updated and run a FULL SYSTEM ALL FILES check.

And did you allow NAV to go online as soon as it asked to and get any unpates that may be available ? Sometimes it has to go 2 or 3 times to get them all right after installation. I know this can be time consuming if on a Dial-up but in the end it pays off.

    I also have a suggestion.

Now that a Virus Checking program has been installed, make it a DAILY routine to check for udates. Do not wait for the Auto udate.

BillyBob I think it was Klez or WEKlez or something like that. Afterward we had problems staying connected to the internet for the updateing to take place though, so I advise her to leave checking for e-mail alone until it gets done. I've also suggested that she installs MailWasher. I wont be surprised if there's still a problem there. The PC still seems not to wellin my opinion:( I don't like the idea of not being able to uninstall Norton though(if she wanted to do that for a more recent one let's say, 2002).

Thanks again and bye for now. Baby awaits:) .

Unless it was posted and I missed it I do not see which version of Windows is being used.

Also, you can find (but well hidden) on the Symantec site a file called symclean.exe.

It's only function in life is to remove versions of Norton software so you can install their 2002/3 versions which won't go on if there is any trace of an older one.

It is pretty well automatic and will delete files, registry entries, etc. Safe and works well.
