By default, XP will remember the view settings for the 400 most recently used folders. After that, XP will begin overwriting the data of the oldest folder and its view setting will be lost. First of all, open Windows Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options > View Tab > and ensure that "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

The folder information is stored in two registry keys:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
To modify the registry to have more than 400 settings, go to Run > type regedit, press Enter and highlight the first key (Shell) then Edit > New > DWORD Value. Name this item "BagMRU Size" (without quotation marks, but with a space). Double-click BagMRU Size, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK. It can be higher, say, 5000 but it can affect the system’s performance.

Repeat the operation for the second key (ShellNoRoam). Close the registry and reboot. Windows XP will now remember 2000 folder view settings instead of 400.

If you’re apprehensive about making changes to the registry, create a system restore point first.

Yet another slant on the problem for those who are not inclined to do Registry editing without some reassurance from MS. Let the MS Wizard help you. Click the "Fix It" icon in that link.

    Hi dastgir,

Kelly's-Korner has an easy fix for you — and here it is:

First, copy everything between the ********** lines:

    ******************************************

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
    "BagMRU Size "=dword:00001f40

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
    "BagMRU Size "=dword:00001f40

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "NoSaveSettings "=dword:00000000

    ********************************************

Second: Open Notepad and paste what you just copied above into it, making sure that "Word Wrap" isn't checked (Edit\Word Wrap; uncheck it if it's checked)(there should be 9 lines total)

Third: Click "File" then click "Save As... ", and in the box, type in "FolderSize.reg" (without the quotes), and save it to the DeskTop.

Lastly: Close out of everything and right-click on FolderSize.reg and select "Merge ". Reboot and now Windows will remember up to 8,000 view stettings. I used it about 5+ years ago and I haven't noticed any performance issues.

Just for complete information, this was the case with the original Windows XP & SP1, but this was fixed in SP2 which has the value BagMRU Size set to 5000 (meaning it'll remember 2500 local & 2500 network folder settings).
