I'm looking for a portable device that will get me on the Web and do e-mail. Not interested in telephone, music, video, games, or misc. apps.

At $230, the 8gb I Pod Touch seems awfully pricey, considering its virtual keypad, when for between $250 - $300, I can get an 8.9" or 10.1" netbook with a (almost) full-sized keyboard and webcam. In that price range there's Acer and Asus.

So, whatdoya think, I Pod Touch or netbook. If netbook, Acer or Asus?

iPod is extremely portable. But size, user interface may cramp your style when authoring, replying to emails.
Netbook .... Will not fit in your pocket, but email activity is all most the the same as using a normal size computer.
It comes down to portability and your email involvement. If you can reply to an email with a few keystrokes, the small "shirt pocket" iPod could be a good form factor. If you manage a fair amount of email or require high keystroke input, netbook may be a better fit. Plus web surfing, music, video, games, misc. apps, and Skype phone come with no baggage to the choice. A interesting new technology for anywhere connectivity ... MiFi allows a simplistic connection (if available and you can justify it's cost). Additional MiFi info.
If you go with a netbook, I just bought a Asus 1000HE .. I love it. You can find 7" Eee PC's for under $200 (runs Linux).

I prefer the Asus over Acer. Acer comps, esp the netbooks, come pre loaded w/ tons of needless Acer apps for things that XP altready has built in. Most netbooks now come with a second partition too, so if want to install Linux and have a dual boot, it's real easy.

I would go for Acer Aspire One.
It has a speedy 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU coupled with up to 1.5GB of RAM, an 8.9 inch WSVGA screen you can use even outdoors, a great keyboard, plus an optional HDSPA/3G module for true go anywhere Internet access. Storage starts at 8GB, thanks to a solid-state drive but can be upgraded to an 80GB unit if you need more storage.
