    Hi,
I've installed Vista Home Basic SP1 (32-bit) as a clean installation on a new laptop. After Vista has retrieved some important patches from MS and installed all of them, I'm unable to run a few programs, like e.g. "USB Safely Remove" or I cannot uninstall the bluetooth software using add/remove program in Control Panel, because Windows keeps displaying something like "The program has stopped running. "
I'm logged as administrator and I'm not sure if this has something to do with the DEP, which is, by the way, disabled, but I can run other executables without any problems.
Maybe you could come up with some hints on how to resolve this annoying issue.
    Thanks!

What was the reason for reinstalling?

    Hello,
I simply decided to change the OS from XP to Vista Home Basic. Yes, the installation disc was a genuine one.
The same happened when I try installing Vista Ultimate 64-bit on an other laptop but I thought it was connected with software incompatibility. The funny thing is that it starts happening after some time and not at once after the OS installation.

Was it clean install, or upgrade?

    Please, post some computer info:
    - processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
    - hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer ", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties ")
    - security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

It was a clean install and this is rather not a hardware related problem as this was happening on two different laptops.
Home Basic is running on Toshiba Satellite Pro U-400 15P that has a 2.0 GHz CPU, 2 GB of RAM, the partition the system is installed on has a size of 120 GB. No external firewall used, Avast is used as antivirus software. Funnily, Avast is running in the system tray but its context menu icon crashes when I try scanning a document. In fact, quite few application crash but they did run right after the installation.

I believe, this is connected with the in-built Windows feature Data Execution Prevention that in the case of my OS is disabled (totally grey) so I can't add the programs causing crashes to the exceptions.
    Why is it disabled?

Same Vista DVD was used on both machines?

For how long has it been going on? Was the laptop connected to the net, while you're installing Vista?
I'm simply wondering, if maybe some infection is involved here...

I installed the system only today. The laptop was disconnected during the installation. I installed Avast first and then connected to the net.

On my XP machine, DEP is active, i.e. it is not grayed out while on my laptop running Vista Basic it is totally disabled.

I'm not a big fan of DEP, and I have it turned off, but let's see, if just for the purpose of a test, we can enable it.

Go Start, and in "Start search" type in:
    cmd
Hold CTRL, and SHIFT buttons, and press Enter.

    At command prompt, type in:
    bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn
    Press Enter.

    Restart computer.
    Is DEP on now?

Yes, this seems to have resolved my problem. Now all the programs that were crashing are running again. DEP is now active. Thank you very much!!

    You're very welcome :)
It's interesting though, why turning DEP off would cause those kind of problems.
I have it off without any ill effects.

P.S. Z jakiego miasta Polsce? Urodziłem się w Krakowie i mieszkałem tam przez 32 lata.

Yes, it's quite odd to comprehend why turning DEP off would cause such problems like in the case of my two copies of Vista. One could expect the exact opposite as you have remarked.

PS: Jestem z Tarnowa, niedaleko Krakowa. Miło, że moim postem zainteresował się właśnie rodak. Jestem mile zaskoczony. :)

    Hahahahaha...
I don't want to upset some mods around here by us talking some "Chinese ", and with some PM rather subject, so good luck, and say "Hello" to my beloved Kraków, if you go for a visit :)

I copied and pasted (bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn),rebooted and still have the grey area for both turn on and turn off in DEP. How do I correct this problem so I can select on or off? Running Vista Home Premium.
