Unfortunately it doesn't allow me to press enter. When I reboot from the disc, it gives me the option to Install Vista, when I choose the language, date, and currency settings etc etc, it then asks for my 25 digit serial. I put this in, and then it goes to the installation page, where after a second or two, it says:

'Windows cannot open the required file D:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002'

However, the file is located on CD and in the correct path. I checked this using the laptop.

    Now, I'm totally confused.
Are you using Vista DVD now, not Recovery Disc?

No, still just the Recovery Disc from NeoTechnology. Never got a DVD with Vista on it.

If I try and start in Safe Mode, it will load a list of drivers. The stay stuck at 'Disc.sys' (I think it was'. Evetually load with the 'Safe Mode' in the four corners, but nothing else appears.

You're doing something wrong with that Recovery Disc.
This is how it works: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html
You don't select "Install now ", because it won't work with Recovery Disc, but you select "Repair your computer ", which eventually leads you to the following options:
    Startup Repair
    System Restore
    Windows Complete PC Restore
    Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
    Command Prompt

I had tried all the options with the disc, including repairing the computer but none of them had worked.

I'm afraid, that without actual Vista DVD, you may be facing reinstall.
Maybe someone else has some other ideas.

Well, if I have to do a reinstall then that's what I have to do. Just a shame I will have to lose a lot of important stuff. How do I go about doing a reinstalltion without a DVD?

You can slave hard drive in another computer, or use hard drive enclosure to retrieve your data.
    Do you have Recovery DVD?
What computer brand, and model is it? It should have recovery partition.

Never got any CD/DVD's when I bought it. There is three partions on the PC. One called 'HDD' - this is the main one at 225GB, a second called something like '_OENM' at about 4GB and a third called 'Recovery' if I remember correctly, and that is about 35MB.

It is a Packard Bell and I think the Model/Type is: UTOW-SFR MS Model No: SFC00. That's all I can find on the chassis.

Start tapping the F11 key immediately after pressing the power button to turn your computer on. Keep tapping the key until you see the Loading Files screen

Well, finally, I am back on my PC! Much to the delight of the wife. No need to use her laptop anymore!

It was the F11 that did it in the end and did a reinstallation. Managed to recover most of the documents/files etc. All the settings have gone from everything. Some programs have stayed and some haven't which is a bit weird. But, overall, I'm chuffed. Thanks broni!
