I've saved a large file from a genealogy program as a rich text file. When I try to send it as an attachment using Express version 6, my send/receive box shows something like sending 1 of 36 files. When it is received at the other end, the files are garbled and not put together as one file. We both are using the same genealogy program, windows 98, and microsoft outlook express. I can open and read the attachments I receive just fine. Does anyone have suggestions for the source of the problem or its solution. Thanks for your experience. MJ

What's most likely happening is OE is splitting the file into several smaller ones. Some ISPs have a limit as to the size of files you can send. The file is split in order to get around this. Don't know where the setting is to set the maximum size of a file to send (perhaps somebody else can help here). To put it back together again, tell them to highlight all the messages by holding down the ctrl key and clicking on each one of the messages in the list. Then right click on one of them and choose combine and decode. This will open a small dialogue that will allow them to make sure the parts are all in the correct order (most likely they'll be numbered 1, 2 ,3 etc. ). After doing this a new message window will open with the file combined as a single file attachment that they can open or save as they would any other file attachment. Hope this helps. :)

MJ Hamilton--How big is the attachment? Each ISP has its own limit on the size of an individual email message (including attachment), but it usually is at least 2MB. If your message is no larger than that (or even if it is, see below), click on OE Tools|Accounts|highlight your account|click Properties|Advanced tab|under Sending there is a box for "break apart messages" and then setting the size of the pieces. Do you have it set to break into parts? If so, uncheck, click Apply and OK.
Can you send that file as just one part now?
If not, try to find out from your ISP what the limit is. Then you will have to break appropriately, or if you have a compression utility, such as WinZip, you can try to compress the file and, with luck, get the number of bytes down below the limit.
