For the last several weeks I've have no luck accessing Windows Update (Not the Windows update catalog link). When clicking scan for updates windows would not go past 0% complete.

Anyway I stumbled (as we sometimes do) across a fix (of sorts) I've always ticked the "Use automatic configuration script" with an appropriate cgi-bin address, as well as manually setting up a proxy server with no problems in the past.

By unticking the automatic script box box I now have regained Windows update access. I've read on various newsgroups that some are saying Windows update is not compatable with a proxy server. I don't thing this is entirely true as I still use the manual proxy settings, but there maybe be an issue if you use the automatic proxy script as I have been. Using the automatic script on it's own still causes the problem.

Hope this may help others with similar problems?

I had the same thing happen to me. It has to do with your connection setup.
If you are using Internet Explorer, here's what to do:

    Go to Tools
    Click on Internet Options
    Click on Connection Tab
    Go to Lan Settings
    And uncheck Automatically detect settings

    That should do the trick

The reason for this as I have been explained, it has to do with Windows XP and configuration of Windows updates and the way we connect to the site.

Anyway, try it. I hope it wortks for you too

Well I have been having the same problem, but the box is unchecked and always has been. I was trying to download XP Service Pack Express Installation, but it keeps taking me back to scan for updates, where I remain at 0%. Any suggestions?

Are you running Norton antivirus? I had the same problem and more a few weeks ago. I could no longer download any file that had to reconnect to the internet to finish the download process. The only thing I changed on my system right before I was able to redownload files like this and windows xp sp1 was my norton antivirus had expired. I uninstalled and cleaned out all norton folders and files. Then I was able to download xp sp1 and IE 6 sp1. Hope this helps some.

No. I don't use Norton Anti-Virus, but I do use Auto update on my system, which every once in a while installs updates. Do you think that might have anything to with not being able to use "scan for updates "? Maybe I already have what is needed in my system.

    LooBoo,
Auto update shouldn't have any effect. Auto update will install only critical updated to your PC. Even if you have every update )critical and recommended etc) installed, a manual update will still scan your PC and report back that there are no updates available.
It seems Windows update has been a little flakey since it first appeared with IE4.0.
Similar to the Modem disconnect dialog box sometimes not appearing when you close IE. A couple of things MS appear not to be able to make robust and reliable in their software?

Well here's a good one. I have tried twice now to download the full 133mb program (overnight) and twice I have come downstairs to see a message:

"Cannot download because the connection with the server was reset. "

So that leaves me nowhere. Now what?

    Looboo,
Sounds like you need a programme like Getright www.getright.com so you can resume a download when it flames out or when you need to log off.
One would imagine that SP1 will be available on the latest or upcomming PC magazine cover CD's as well?

Well so much for Service Pack 1- I did use "Get Right" to download the complete program. However, after installing I had a great deal of instability with startup, certificates and banking downloads. I have no idea why, but as fast as I installed it (and that took 45 minutes), I uninstalled it. Why mess with things that are going just fine as they are?

    Bad luck Looboo!
Unfortunately for a few, windows updates/service packs can be a real pain in the @#$%!
Keep the service pack for when you need to do a reformat. It may work OK on a clean system without any updates etc.
