    Hello,

I installed Vista SP2 and now the computer freezes up every so often and I cannot use the mouse or the keyboard. I have an HP Touchscreen computer. Also Norton's Anti Virus "Live Upate" doesn't work any more and returns an "error" before the freeze-up happens.

I didn't update SP2 through Windows Update because I only have a dial-up connection and it would take too long. I saw that there was an update to use before installing SP2, but when I tried to run it, it said that it didn't apply to my system.

I sure hope somebody can help me.

    Thanks for your time.

    As usual,
    Paul

Sounds like your version of Norton is incompatible with Vista SP2, which could be causing the problem... Which version do you use?

Don't selectively quote me please - I am aware of that article, hence the question within my post. ;)

    Hi Paul,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

Please let me know which version of Norton AntiVirus you have installed, and also what error message you receive when running LiveUpdate. Once I receive this information I can assist you in resolving the issue with Norton.

    Thank you,
    Mike

I just updated to VSP2 a few days ago and I am having similar problems. Mouse/keyboard will stop, even if the system is just idle. Its progressively getting worse after VSP2 1st froze up while just idling, then on a defrag, then while doing a back up(windows version), Then JUST TODAY: I tried to do a restore, and none of the restore points would work, then when it boots it will freeze now in like 2 min. after boot, now it freezes in Safe mode, and now it freezes while trying to boot off Vista disc, I CANT even get the computer to boot at all. It was all working 100% fine until the service pack 2 update ran!!!! I do also have a Norton product: 360 premeir Ed. So whats the deal?

Still messing around with this computer, and all of a sudden it just booted normally, I went to windows updater and VSP2 was there and said it needed to be installed. What the heck???? I already installed VSP2. Why would this be? Its already in my install log as completed this is the most bizarre windows glitch ever! Ill try it again I guess, what could it hurt..... maybe it will actually help this time

    Hi BringBackXP,

All 2009 Norton products are compatible with Windows Vista SP 2.

Make sure that you are using version 3 of Norton 360 Premier Edition and manually run LiveUpdate, possibly multiple times, until it informs you that there are no more updates available. If any updates are installed, restart your computer. The latest version of Norton 360 version 3 is 3.0.0.135.

If by chance you are using Norton 360 version 2, and your subscription is valid, you are entitled to a free update to version 3. Please NOTE, while this process will update you to the latest version of Norton 360 it will not extend your subscription. To update, visit the Norton Update Center at the link below.

    Thank you,
    Mike

Thanks for the advise Mike! I did try that, and I feel that Norton is now running as it should, however Vista is just going crazy. After the 2nd install of VSP2 there is now a mystery 47mb partition with no drive name (like C:, D:) that im sure has never been there before. Im just really Sick of Vista. For 2 years its been a nightmare! This was the straw that broke the camels back for me, im reinstalling XP right now and getting rid of Vista as im typing. Never had any problems with XP. Maybe when System 7 goes commercial and they fix all the bugs, ill try upgrading again. Best of luck to the guy that started this post! and thanks again Mike!

    Back to the original question.

I look for any driver or major software updates at the providers website before installing a new service pack. You can uninstall SP2 and just run all the current updates for SP1 until you have your drivers and software updated.

People see a new service pack and think it will make their system work better. It is pretty much a roll-up of previous updates.

If you have problems with a new service pack, I recommend that you uninstall it until you "update" your system and then try again.

It might have been a bad installation of the service pack, again, I would uninstall it. Trying to fix it after the installation might be fruitless.

    Matt

I doubt it has spontaneously appeared: my PC has always had a tiny partition that doesn't do anything ;)
