Hello all. After seeing that Microsoft has released SP2, and people we're saying that they noticed a big improvement, I decided to download and install it. The file was over 300MB. After it had downloaded, I started the installation, and then went in the bat as it said it could take sometime. I came back and the screen was black (similar to when it starts up) and it was stuck saying:

    '!! 0xc090036 !! 800/52262 photometadatahandler.dll'

Didn't have a clue what this meant so I restarted the PC, and tried to load Windows as normal and it started to list off several items and it came to 800 again and just froze.

Restarted again and tried Safe Mode, but the same thing happens there. By this point I was completely stuck. Totally unaware what has happened. After several attempts of trying to start the PC up, it gave me the option to 'Repair Automatically', which I choose to do. The first time it said that it was unable to do so, and the second time it said it had done so but still not rebooting and getting stuck.

Now I was really confused. When I switch the PC on now I get the following:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next. "
    3. Click "Repair your computer. "

If you do not have this disc (which I don't), contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

    File: \windows\system32\winload.exe

    Status: 0xc0000000f

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

So now, I can't even do anything, not even get it in to Safe Mode. I manged to make a Vista Recover Disc from the wife's laptop (which I'm using now) from NeoSmart Technologies. I inserted that into the PC and tried repairing it but that doesn't even work. Any ideas?

    Regards.

    There are several options there.
I assume, you tried "Startup repair ", correct?
    Did you try System Restore?

Yes, tried the Startup Repair but that failed and there are no available restore points.

Reboot with Recovery Disc, but this time select command prompt.
    Run following command:
    copy c:\windows\system32\boot\winload.exe c:\windows\system32\
Restart computer, and see what happens.

You sure, you left spaces after "copy ", and "winload.exe "?

While at command prompt, can you navigate to:
    c:\windows\system32\boot
and see, if winload.exe is there?

What I did before was pressed up whilst in CMD and there was a list of things that had been typed in. I opened one of them with Notepad (it was all I could open it with), and selected All Files (so I could see everything), from there I navigated to C:\Windows\System32\Boot and there was nothing there. Just used the CD function within CMD and that just list there is a folder by the name of en-US with in C:\Windows\System32\Boot\

Also, when I try to do a Startup Repair, it fails, but gives me the option to send information about the problem. Underneat that it gives'problem Details' e.g. Problem event Name, Problem Event Signature 01, 02 etc etc. Shall I Post that?

    Sure thing.

I'm not sure, how you did proceed, but this is the way to go.
Let's say, when you boot to Command Prompt, your screen should look like this:
    C:\>
    At that type in:
    cd c:\windows\system32\boot
    Press Enter.
    Now, you should see:
    c:\windows\system32\boot
    Type:
    dir
    Press Enter.
This will list all files in the above directory.
    Look for:
    winload.exe

I edited the previous post, remembered to do the CD in CMD, far easier was of explaining it, but there was only a folder called en-US, and within that there is nothing.

The Startup Repair list the following:

    Problem Signature

    Problem Event Name: StartupRepairV2
    Problem Signature 01: ExternalMedia
    Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386
    Problem Signature 03: 0
    Problem Signature 04: 65537
    Problem Signature 05: unknown
    Problem Signature 06: MissingOsLoader
    Problem Signature 07: 0
    Problem Signature 08: 3
    Problem Signature 09: FixBootConfig
    Problem Signature 10: 2
    OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
    locale ID: 1033

Go back to command prompt, and run two following commands:

    copy C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-b..environment-windows_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.22125_none_69b1958fa5f3f478\winload.exe c:\windows\system32\boot
    Press Enter.

    Then...
    copy C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-b..environment-windows_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.22125_none_69b1958fa5f3f478\winload.exe c:\windows\system32
    Press Enter.

Oh boy. I'm running out of ideas....
I've never tried this, and I have no idea, if it's gonna work from Recovery Disc command prompt, but it won't hurt to try. At least, we'll know.
    Run:
    sfc /scannow

Used the sfc /scannow which just brings a list of options e.g. verifyonly, scanfil, offbootdir etc.

I ran chkdsk /r earlier and that found zero errors.

Unless someone else has more ideas, I'd say, without real Vista DVD, I don't know what else could be done.

Just tried again with sfc /SCANNOW and it said:

'Beginning system scan. This process will take some time'

    Then:

'Windows Resource Protection could not preform the requested operation'

Again, I have no idea, if it'll work with command prompt, but instead of hitting Enter, hold CTRL, and SHIFT, then hit Enter.
