Yesterday I installed 4.79 and the installation seemed flawless.
However, I get the following when I close the browser by clicking the X in upper right.

What can I do for this?

    Plug-Ins I installed:

    Shockwave Flash 5.0 r41
Sound Player for Netscape Navigator, v.1.1.1515
    NPAVI32, avi plugin DLL
    Default Plug-in

Will these be all I need to hear sounds on the web as well as video?

I went to a site where you can listen to music. I clicked and it opened the little NS player, but I got an error that it could not play the wav file.
It is enabled under Plug Ins.

Many sites require Media Player which I have, but it is not used by Netscape because I always get an option to download Media Player. Why is this?

    Thanks

    Ann

    Hi Ann,

    The two errors:
NETSCAPE caused an invalid page fault in
    module PR3240.DLL at 0167:60002589.

NETSCAPE caused an invalid page fault in
    module RPCRT4.DLL at 0167:7fb9181c.

are a Netscape Communicator bug. Usually occurring if you shut down while in the Mail & Newsgroups component. It's unlikely that this will be fixed, as the forthcoming updates for Communicator will only be for Corporate customers.

    The Plugins Download Site

    Windows Media Player Plugin

    RealPlayer Plugin

    Netscape LiveAudio Plugin
You have this pluging (npaudio.dll) but in the event it may be corrupt...

Give us the link for the site that didn't work for the .wav file, and the error. Try this site and see if you get an error: http://www.eventsounds.com/

You get a nag to download Media Player because MS wants you to have the latest version. I would keep your Ver. 6.4, if that's what you're using. Just be certain to keep up with the Security updates for MPlayer.

    Ramona,

    The site is here:

    http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/cle1019/index.htm

and I get error message "unable to play wav sound "

The MP version I have is 6.01. Do you think my system will accept 6.4. The reason MP does not work in NS is because NS was installed after MP...correct?

What Security Updates? Don't tell me this too is vunerable to viruses or worse? Geezz!

Heavens....the sound site you sent me to works!!
Thanks so much. Please check our the site of the old band music and let me know if it works for you. Is there any other player that you can recommend?

Regarding the error in closing NS, I won't get it if myMail window is closed first?

    Bye,

    Ann

    Hi Ann,

The reason the Big Band site didn't work for you, is that your Ver. of MPlayer doesn't have the MPEG Layer-3 Codec, as noted on the site:

" For those of you who can't play the wav files, your system may not be capable of playing wav files saved in MPEG 3 Layer compressed format. If you get a message saying it can't play them or the sound recorder shows zero time after the download, Download this program called MPEG.EXE which when run, will install the MPEG compression codes to your system.
    OR
    Download
Microsoft Windows Media Player v6.4 "

The MPEG Layer-3 isn't the normal codec for wav files. This type of wav file is smaller than the norm.

You can download the MPEG Layer-3 Codec here:
    http://www.soundamerica.com/codec.htm

I'm not sure that I would trust the download on that site. It may be O.K., but I'm pretty conservative.

You might want to consider upgrading to MPlayer 6.4. The most current Ver. is 6.4.07.1112. I wouldn't try to use MPlayer 7 with your system. I think you will just be inviting problems.
    Download site is here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/win32otherx86.asp

Here are the Security Patches for MPlayer 6.4:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/win32otherx86.asp
    November 2000
MS00-090 : .ASX Buffer Overrun and .WMS Script Execution Vulnerabilities

    November 2001
MS01-056 : Windows Media Player .ASF Processor Contains Unchecked Buffer

MS02-032 : Cumulative Patch for Windows Media Player (Q320920)
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS02-032.asp

Does that make your head swim? ;)

As to the two errors you're getting, I can't say that it is written in stone you will never get those errors if you shut down with the Mail or News window closed. It is less likely that you will get one or both of the errors.

MPlayer needs to be configured to play specific files. I no longer use it because of all the security risks. But you can configure it within the Player itself.

    Netscape Install Errors

    Ramona,

I fell off my chair and I am ROTFL....or crying!!
I can't believe all the updates required.

I don't use MediaPlayer as a stand alone program much but I do want to try it out at some of the sites I visit and I never can see any video (usually news). I will try the plug-in link you gave me and see if it works or not. At this rate, I won't have room on my HD.

What Player do you use if you use any?

This is like dancing the tango, two steps forward and two steps back. I need a drink...hahaha.

As always, you have the answers.

    Thanks,

    Ann

    Hi Ann,

Figured that would blow you away! That's why I don't use it.

I use MusicMatch Jukebox as my default player, and CD burner. It's a huge program, and doubt that you would want it, as it's 9360 KB.

Let us know if you need more help!

    Hi Ann,

    I should clarify this remark:

I'm not sure that I would trust the download on that site. It may be O.K., but I'm pretty conservative.

I was referring to the download on the Big Band site, not the Sound America site. The MPEG Layer-3 Codec is available at multiple sights on the Internet. Just do a Google Search .

The file to look for is either L3codecp.exe ( "professional" version, 293kb) or L3codecx.exe ( free version, 227kb). Be sure to virusscan before opening, as you would with all downloads from unknown sources.

Here's a site that offers both versions, (As Ramona said, a Google search will come up with more).

    http://rookscape.com/vbgaming/tutAW.php

Regarding Windows Media Player, that has an "internal" version of the mpeg layer-3 codec so it will not help you if you want to use Netscape's LiveAudio plugin (npaudio.dll) to play those Big Band mpeg wav files online. See this thread for more information:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8242

Also, if you need or want the Windows Media Player 6.4 (mpfull.exe) once you install it you only need the last security update, 26 June 2002 Cumulative Patch for Windows Media Player (Q320920) Updated: July 24, 2002 (Version 2.0) since all the previous security updates will be included.

    Ramona - Alice

Now I am really confused

If I just add the MPEG Layer-3 Codec alone, will NS then play the Big Band wav files? This means I will not need the Media Player download?

What about the Media Player 6.1 which 98SE installed? Does this need all those security updates too?

    Hi Ann,

Yes, NS will play the MPEG Layer-3 wav files. However, it is recommended that you upgrade to MPlayer 6.4 for Windows 95 and NT" even if you are using Windows 98. It also adds the Netscape plug-in information.
Those updates are only for Media Player 6.4, but without upgrading from 6.1, to the best of my knowledge, you would be vulnerable to the security risks.

Post back if you have more questions.

Alice - No offense meant...I'm sorry

Ramona - Finally got it all downloaded, but have not installed yet.

BTW, do I have to edit any keys in the Registry when I delete the Talkback files? Or is the deletion enough?

A bit off the topic, but I am sure you have an answer..heehee. Can I get all the Win98SE and IE 5.0 critical updates at the TechNet site where I got the Media Player updates? It will take some time to read all of that, but I don't know where else to do this. At microsoftupdate. com I have to install something and I would not like to do that.

    Thanks,

    Ann

Ohmygosh Ann! No offense taken, I "m sorry you thought I was offended :) I just menat that it would be better if one person answered your questions since that way it would be less confusing!

Good luck with the codec install (it's a piece of cake!) and those mpeg wav files.

Alice - I've got the wav files playing A-OK.

Ramona - Thanks for the links. Now I hope I can figure out what I absolutely need to download. I guess its best to have more than less. Unbelievable how MS works. No other business could get away with that and still be in business.

I'll be downloading for the next couple of days, weeks, months???

All the help is so appreciated.

    Hi Ann,

Glad all is well with your Media concerns.

If you have questions on those Critical Updates, be sure to ask before installing any of them. The Security/Virus Forum or the Windows 98 Forum will be glad to offer a helping hand.

I know that Alice posts there frequently and she is quite knowledgeable in matter of Windows OS, and keeps current on all the update information.

I tried to view some video clips at msnbc and abc and now the MediaPlayer opens and the video loads, but all I get is sound....no video.

I installed MP6.4, the NS MP 6.4 plug in and I installed all the MP updates.

    Can you help?

    Ann
