    Hi all,

Every time I defrag, at the very beginning of the window there's a red line (with a bunch of blue and white lines after it) and in the middle there's a red line, also surrounded by the blue and white lines.

I've used 4 different defrag programs and the result is the same "” even though the other defraggers say "0% fragmented files ", Windows always shows the same red lines.

How do I find out what the files are that are fragmented so I can "fix" them?

Hi Chris. If the other defragmentation programs show a fragmentation of 0% then I wouldn't worry about it. Which defragmentation programs have you used? I personally stopped using the built in Windows Defragmenter long ago since it wasn't as good as some of the other third party disk defragmenters. The fragmented part on your drive could be system files that are in use or are written into memory that can't be defragged.

    Hi Evan,

Other than Windows, I've use Autologics, TuneXP, SmartDefrag, Diskeeper Lite, Defraggler and a couple of others I can't remember.

The odd thing is that when I boot to a cloned copy of my main HD and defrag, there's no red lines anywhere. And, when I'm in my "clone" and defrag the main drive, the red lines are still there.

    OK! But I'm still curious.

When the Windows defrag program finishes it should pop up a box that has a button you can click to view the results. It will list files that cannot be defragged because they are in use or immovable. Some AV programs, that constantly monitor your system, will be some of those shown that cannot be defragged.

It is amazing how picky us PC Users can be sometimes. We worry ourselves over 1 fragmented bar. lol

Or we push our pc for just 50 extra mhz of cpu power.

Try to defrag in safe mode without networking. If that does not work make the HD a slave drive in another PC and defrag it.
