    [Resolved] Docs & Sets/Email progs.

    Hello Everyone,

I posted this in a different

    Hello Everyone!

I recently did a scan using Malwarebytes. THis is because there were 'strange' things happening and Spybot, Adaware and AVG did not clear. It cleared a couple of trojans and cleared numerous cookies.
Since then, I have had my Documents and Settings appear at startup, and have been unable to have my email programmes "remember" me. Now, I have to sign in each time even after hitting the 'remember me' button.
I have XP Prof. + SP3. Windows firewall. I have already mentioned the 3 main regular security programmes I have.
There is 149 GB on the disc and 87.6 free space available.
I cleared the cookies and the temp files.
In msconfig, the Docs & Sets do not appear on the startup list, but they appear at the bottom on a scan of startup programmes by Hijackthis.

I am not very technical, and would appreciate some advice, if there is an answer, I would be glad to learn how to overcome it!

    Thanks in advance,

    Colinito

These are the two scan/reports that were requested,

The first instructs me to ZIP it. I have tried by downloading Winzip. I can not find the zipped version of this report - I will try again if I need to but I hope this will travel without damage -

    Hahahaha....

HiYo by Incredimail is considered an adware, and it may have something to do with your email problems. I recommend, you uninstall it.

Disable TeaTimer, as it'll interfere with the cleaning process:
Right click Spybot's TeaTimer System Tray Icon.
    Click Exit Spybot-S&D Resident.
    TeaTimer closes.

    1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

    2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

    3. Put checkmarks next to the following HijackThis entries:

    - O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    - O4 - Global Startup: D-Link AirPlus.lnk = ?
    - O4 - Global Startup: Phone Connection Monitor.lnk = ?

    4. You may also checkmark following entries (these are unnecessary startups; no actual programs will be removed):

    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Smapp] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\SMTray.exe
    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe "
    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe
    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe "
    - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Messenger (Yahoo!)] "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe" -quiet
    - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AbacastDistributedOnDemand:11] C:\Documents and Settings\Colin Houlden\Local Settings\Application Data\AbacastDistributedOnDemand\Node\11\AbacastDistributedOnDemand.exe -r:11 -x:1
    - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
    - O4 - Global Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE
    - O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SASWINLO.dll

    5. Click on Fix checked button.

    6. Restart computer.

    7. Post new HijackThis log.

    docs & sets/email progs

    Hello again Broni,

It appears that we have half of a 'result'!!
Following your instructions, all 12 items were "fixed" by hijackthis.
I still have to sign in to my email programmes - I think - I haven't closed them all since opening with a sign-in to get back to your last post to me, but my Docs & Sets no longer came up at startup!
Below is the latest Hijackthis log - (I note that it quotes I.E.7. - I actually use Firefox for my browser all the time, I hope that does not make any difference to what has gone before.)

If this is the completion of your help, my grateful thanks for everything that you have done. Also, for the way that you made it easy for me to follow your directions. Although I have had a computer for about 4 years now, I am not very knowledgeable in the "Technical Department" and all that has been done, I could not have begun to attempt on my own! If there is more to do, I look forward to your continuing assistance.

    Regards,

    Colinito

You're very welcome, but we're not 100% done yet.

    What's the story about HiYo?
Did you decide to keep it, it wasn't present in Add\Remove, or...?

    Not at all.

When we're done, and the problem still exist, you'll have to start new topic at some general forum to deal with it.

    Hello Broni,

You said - "What's the story about HiYo? "
Oops! er, sorry! It got forgotten in the excitement of all the scanning and copying etc!

I will include it in the following list that I intend to delete when this is finished. I do not really understand what the results of the scans are, whether they are OK to keep or shopuld be deleted, so I think that I should delete the programmes until I receive assistance to use them again, in which instance, I can download them again.
CC Cleaner; Security Check; Malware Bytes; SuperAntiSpyware; GMER; Hijackthis; and, of course - HiYo!

    Regards

    Colinito

Regarding HiYo, I need to know, if it's present in Add\Remove, and if it's, I want you to uninstall it, and post fresh HJT log.
If it's not there, let me know.

As for others, you can remove Security Check, and GMER.
I strongly recommend, you keep CCleaner, Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes, and use them once in a while.

I'd suggest, you also keep HJT. It's a very small file, and it may be needed in the future in case of some further infection. It's very small program, so it doesn't take space.
Do NOT use it by yourself, though.

    Hello Brondi,

HiYo was in add/remove, I have removed it.Security Check and GMER were on the desktop and I have deleted them.
I shall keep the four that you recommend, in a file on the desktop and use them only under guidance!(I wouldn't know how to understand the results anyway!) Would you advise a routine check with them and post the results back here? or do you have another suggestion?

The Hijackthis result is below -

As for Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes, the instructions are my post #2.
Follow them, and those two programs will find something, or not. If something found, just fix the problem(s). If nothing found, there is nothing else to do.
Run the two above once a month, or if you feel like your computer mis-behave.

As for CCleaner, I'll give you some other program, listed below (TFC), which is pretty straightforward. Use it weekly.

    As of now......

    Your computer is clean :)

    1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

    2. Turn off System Restore:

    - Windows XP:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check "Turn off System Restore ".
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    - Windows Vista:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
    4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
    5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
    6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C: ")
    7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
    8. Click OK

    3. Restart computer.

    4. Turn System Restore on.

    5. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

[SIZE= "4"]6. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately![/SIZE]

    7. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

    8. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

I'm marking this thread as resolved.
