So when I tried to boot up my computer from the hard-disk, windows XP service pack 2 would not start. It gave me the following error:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I went to this site to try and solve the problem but my version of XP is an OEM-installed operating system so I didn't try the solution:

Okay. I just did that and now I get a new error that says:

The Logon User Interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load.

Contact your system administrator to replace the DLL , or restore the original DLL.

It only gives me one option which is to restart.

Though it may not be the same I've had this issue on a couple of Windows 2000 servers but I could never get any UI. Basically the system hive of the registry had got too large. It ended up being a rebuild but there are a couple of ways I found to get the data off. If you can get to the recovery console you can go to c:\windows\system32\config, rename system system.bad, rename system.alt system and reboot, my concern here though is that as you've managed to get UI it may be too late - compare the sizes. Or else you could download something like the Universal Boot CD for Windows which will give you networking support

I think I figured out what the initial problem was. I tried to fix it but now I have a new problem.

    Background:

I tried to turn off my computer one night but woke up the next morning with it still trying to shut down. After a while, I decided to just reboot it so I turned it off but I received the following error like I said above:

--Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM --

So then I went to the recovery console and ran chkdsk /r. After doing that, my computer rebooted but then gave me the following error:

--The Logon User Interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load.

Contact your system administrator to replace the DLL , or restore the original DLL.--

So to solve this problem I went to this link,

    http://supportwiki.cisco.com/ViewWi...r_to_replace_DLL_or_restore_the_original_DLL_.

and tried the resolution. When I got to the line

    ren msgina.dll msgina.old

the recovery console said something about not being able to find the msgina.dll file.

So then I just tried to expand from a Windows XP OEM cd.

Now windows just keeps restarting without actually loading.

The URL you posted above contains no text so I have no idea what solution you attempted to follow

Will the computer start in Safe Mode? I would be doubtful of that and your only recourse may be to attempt a Repair of XP and if that fails to make a clean install.
