I've been searching around to replace my older 32-bit desktop, as it's almost near the end of its useful life. I do however have a new laptop that runs with a 64-bit processor. It will handle some of my software, but not all of it. While searching online for newer equipment, I seemed to understand that the newer generation of computer processors are now capable of handling software made to work with either processor speeds......Can anyone enlighten me on this?.....Since I'm partially disabled, I find it difficult to run all over the island of Montréal to check things out in person.........Any info would be greatly appreciated......TNX!:)

More important is what operating system is installed, 32 bit or 64 bit. My dual core laptop will run a 64 bit operating system by I've installed 32 bit versions (dual boot).

Tnx.....I've actually been able to run word processors on both pc's. They're all the latest versions and will install and run o.k.......Ditto for Explorer, Firefox and some others. I do, however, have other software (Also recent) which will not work, including games, etal........Could it be that the CPU's are from 2 different manufacturers? Here's the data on my systems.....And also; TNX for your reply. It is most appreciated.....:)

Your Desktop AMD 64 3500+ is a 64 bit CPU running with a 32 bid OS and that is OK I also have the same setup on one of my machines and it will run just about anything except hungry games that I don't play anyway but apart from that it's fine.
As Tony T writes you can dual boot that 32 bit OS with a 64 bit.
Depending on your Motherboard it is a Socket 939 you might be able to upgrade up to a AMD 64 4800+ dual core, all AMD 64 are 64 bit.
