Hi, I am having a major problem with my PC. On boot up, the screen displays a dotted grid all over the screen. As the boot up continues vertical lines replace the grid. When Windows XP loads the screen can go blank for a time, and the whole system slows down. Also when I scrool with the arrows or the mouse the screen sometimes becomes garbled. I have fixed the MBR and done a system restore but the problem persists. Any ideas.?

Hi, and welcome to the BBS

I would suspect that you have a Video (Display) problem.
Are you using onboard VGA or a Video card.
If you are using a card try re-seating the card or if possible try another card, sometimes updating drivers might help as well.

Thank you for your reply. I have a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE Card. I will do as you suggest.

The only other things I can think of is to clean the gold connectors on the card with a soft pencil eraser. Check that the card is seated squarely and bolted in tightly. If the card has a fan, check it is spinning freely when the system is running.

No luck, try removing any added hardware (eg, PCI cards).

Look at getting it stable at startup first.

    Matt

Thanks for your reply. A few other members pointed out the problem, the video card. That was the problem, however the problem still exists although it is intermittent, I am not sure if the problem lies with my motherboard or my video card.

Thanks for your reply. When you say the chip, is it the video card chip you are referring to, and if so replacing the video card would sort out the problem for good.? Adrian.
