What do you mean? SpeedFan doesn't open, or...?
If there is something super-private, you can always PM me, but please, don't expect any one-on-one session. It won't benefit other members.
    As for hidden files...
Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, remove checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders.

Could not get temp dialog box to show again is what I meant.
NP, was not requesting a one on one.
Simply wanted you to know that I will soon be 71 yrs old and have had several ministrokes (TIA's). This has caused short-term memory loss. And wanted you to know that I may need additional instructions to perform certain tasks.
I completely agree with you about the 512 Ram. But, at my age and serious health problems, I don't feel I need to increase the Ram. The extent of my computer useage is confined to playing cards and board games online. I do visit websites like Aljazeezra and US newspapers. That is extent of my computer usage. I can deal with the 512 Ram, just can't deal with computer not working as it should. Definitely a bug of some sort has installed itself. And no doubt, I probably added to the problem trying to fix it myself. The problem or problems did not occur until daughter went to that link. Never had any problems before. It all started on that day.
One major thing I did in between you and others, was installed IE8.
I hated it and did an uninstall. To my dismay, many changes took effect that I did not want. e.g. taskbar changed, things added to taskbar, sizing of fonts, texts, etc., all changed. When I uninstalled, IE6 returned w/o any prompting on my part.
I am hoping you can kill the bug or whatever it is and then help me (or pass me to others) to figure out how to clean out things on this computer that do not belong. I appreciate all the help/time you are doing to fix my problem or problems.
    Thank you very much....

    You're welcome :)
    Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
    Open it.
In left pane expand Computer folder.
    Click on Sensor.
In right pane, there will be some temperatures listed.
Please, post back what are the results.

The temps would not run. So I did a report and this is what it showed:
    Software Thermal Control Not Supported
    Temperature Sensing Diode Not Supported
    Thermal Monitor 1 Supported
    Thermal Monitor 2 Not Supported
    Thermal Monitoring Not Supported
    Thermal Trip Not Supported
    Software Thermal Control Not Supported
    Temperature Sensing Diode Not Supported
    Thermal Monitor 1 Supported
    Thermal Monitor 2 Not Supported
    Thermal Monitoring Not Supported
    Thermal Trip Not Supported
I had read in speedfan that some computers would not show temps. Don't know if tells you anything. Any other solution to this temp thing?
The report had a couple of suggestions, and one being yours about needing more ram...

    P.S.
I did not enter the info but once. It is now repeating on its own.
I am beginning to suspect I have a hacker gremlin...

The above picture is from my example, not from your computer.

What actually happens, when you double click on SpeedFan icon.

When you clicked on Sensor folder in Everest, was the right pane totally empty, or what?
This is how my readings look like: http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p4368767.gif

Sensors under speedfan just shows a blank page. clicking on sensors nothing comes up. did the info I sent you from the report about no support for the temp sensing diode not supported?

I have the full chart from the webpage you had me send it to. It is now in documents, paint, picasa, my pics but will not let me copy or paste it. nor will it let me do the ctrl c/v copy. If you can tell me how to get it to you, I will. it will go to email but don't have email for you guys.

sorry, picasa does not have upload to another website. So I give up, here is what I read:
    Found ACPI temp (15.oc)
    CPU:
    Fan 1 2092 rpm
    Fan 2 0
    Fan 3 0

Temp 1: 48C (with green check mark)
2: -128C (with blue down arrow)
3: 52C (with red up arrow)
Temp 1: 15C (with blue down arrow)
    Core: 47C

Sorry, this could have been avoided if I had done as you asked and typed it out in the beginning, I apologize...

    Very good :)
Your processor temperature is at 47C-48C.
Maximum Temps for your processor are listed at 74C-76C, but 47-48C for idle desktop seems little bit high.
    How old is the computer?
Have you ever cleaned it inside?

    2003 or early 2004, can't remember.
Yes, I take it apart every six months, clean with proper vacuum, q-tips with cleaner for computers. very carefully...
But have moved to diff housing and may have to do this every couple of months now. I will take it apart tomorrow and clean.

You do so, but please, DO NOT use vacuum cleaner. It creates a lot of static electricity, which is a killer for electronic components.
You need to buy a can of compressed air (any computer/office type of store).

Should we just give up this one and go for new? I would've liked to wait on Win7 as Vista is terrible...
But been almost a month now and still not able to play my simple games...
    Getting very bored...

If you're ready for brand new, shiny machine, go for it by all means.

No, I am not ready for a new one. But, I don't know what else to do. Seems as tho you and others have delved into many diff things w/o any results. If experts cannot find the problem, what am I to do but buy a new one. But it is so very strange that this began the day my daughter clicked on that link advertising for free money and filled out the info (the whole enchalada).
Choose only to buy new if you will help with that purchase. I definitely would want one that would let me upgrade to Win7 as I would only get XP now. Prefer Dell unless you know of one that lasts as long as this one has...
    Thank you
