Adela - wonderful that your system is now in good working order. One question though - have you made your Norton Repair disk yet? That disk is designed for disaster time - when a virus has hit your system so hard it won't boot to windows for you to try a repair. The disk should allow the PC to boot and then should run a scan for you to hopefully dis-infect. I have no idea whatever why anyone would tell you that you didn't need one. Especially with the very low cost of a floppy and the high incidence of various viri running around.

As to your helping - you can. There will be questions asked here that you can confidently answer. Do. And when you see others that you think maybe you can almost answer, fire up a search engine and look for more information on the web. It may allow you to give an answer and at worst will leave you knowing more than you did before. A "no lose" situation IMO.

Mike - what you did with Adela isn't uncommon and the usual is to also do what you did and post a recap so the thread makes sense. Done a couple myself from time to time. And for the same reasons. Sometimes the mess is just way beyond the user's ability to deal with.

    Hello Newt:

Thanks for reminding me of creating a rescue disk, and you are so right that it IS, I understand now, mighty important in disaster time, and I''ll certainly do it immediately.

I feel quite intimidated as to tell others how to solve their computer problems...when I can't do it myself, but Your suggestions make sense to me and I'll try to help as much as I can.

Thanks for everything, Newt. :) Adela

    Thank you for your understanding!

Adel is suposed to be getting a new Zip disk and I am to help her prepare the Rescue disk which will be a Boot floppy and Norton Rescue on the zip disk!

I am going to also copy a few other files and Utilities to it also! She only had 1 Zip disk and it had backups and data!

    Thanks again,
    Mike

If your computer has the backdoor.autopder go to this site http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html
and download the file "fixautopoupder.exe" follow the instructions exactly.
Basically you should start the computer in the safe mode.
    Then run the program fixautopoupder.exe.
Then uninstall Norton because your Norton files are now comtaminated.
Re-Install Norton, do a live update, and then a full system scan.
Read the instructions if you have Win ME or XP to disable the System Restore.
    Good Luck
The above site lists 31 viruses with removal tools and instructions. That includes the W32.Klez virus also.
    Patience and go slow.

    Hello Boonski:

Thanks so much for your suggestions to get rid of the autoupder, but luckily for me Mike, one of the members on this list, has helped me very efficiently and I''m now free from this virus.

But I''ll keep this information just in case this little devil ever returns.

    Thanks again. Adela

    Hi Boonski

You are right this should have been done to be safe!

I didn't think of it! I am scheduled to help her make the norton Rescue disks so I will do this at that time!

We had to reinstall norton to get it to go realtime resident! So instead of an overlay install I will uninstall norton and use the rav and sysclean utilites to totally remove norton then run the auto-remover tool before reinstalling norton!

    Thanks
    Mike
