I changed from vista to windows XP Pro but cant get the audio drivers to work any more so have no sound at all and cannot play any movies in any movie format and get a 'codec' error message. I have tried uploading audio drivers from other sites but no success ( so far...). Details: Compaq Presario C700 ( thats all it says on sticker on btm, C700, nothing else) . I have tried to install audio drivers in the format spXXXXX.exe and they seem to install good as per instructions but still I have yellow error flags in device management for audio ( but not for modem, its good). Any advice is appreciated as I am a beginner to driver problems.

    now media device problem

thanks Pete, but stil get error message: ''Driver Installation Failed: Could not find media device for this driver'' . This was after installing the UAA driver as per the long list of driver instructions on your list.So to sum up, the first chipset driver installed ok, but I could not get a link to the next graphices driver so I skipped it , and the next audio driver dnloaded ok ( from the asia-giogabyte site) and this was the UAA driver at 47270 KB. Next driver to instal was the audio driver from the 'softpaq' link which dnloaded fine at 1411 KB ... but when I ran it (called sp34200.exe) it came up and said coud not find MEDIA device for this driver. Thats as far as I have got with this 10 driver installation list. should I keep going or have I made a mistake in bypassing the graphics driver ? thanks again for your advice.

Looking at the drivers offered on the HP site for the 700 series I find that none are offered .....

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...Id=135&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3466274

Without knowing the exact model no. it is difficult to search precisely.

    Let's try another approach ....

Download SIW and look under Devices > Sound. I would expect to see the sound chip as the first entry in that list. Post what detail there is.

The graphics driver has no bearing on the sound problem.

there is not a title called devices / sound that I can see. Sorry to be so slow. I have 3 sections now opened up in SIW on my computer , software, hardware, network. Do you mean 'audio and video codecs ' under 'software'?

What I do have under system summary is ; Hp 103C_5335KV , Presario C700 Notebook PC, version: F.08, ser num CND7450ww1, SKU num; GS591EA ABV

mother board: HP 30D9, version 83.19,

video adaptor : Mobile intel (R) 965 express chipest family

I am sorry I cant find the sound card which you need.

Seems that SIW does not stick to a particular order on reopening :)

you must mean ' Conexant HD-Audio SmartAMC HD2', it comes above the folder called Audio codecs. The devic ID is as follows: HDAUDIO \ FUNC_01VEN_14F1DEV_5045SUBSYS-103C30D9REV_1001\42636A200001

    anything else you need,

    thx again

oh dear. Still says ' driver installation failed: could not find the MEDIA device for this driver ' ( but it seemed to be a good download of 7010 KB of sp37055.exe) I do appreciate your help as I am guessing its almost packing up time back home for you .

For info , I went back to device manager and the yellow exclamation marks are against : Microsoft Kernel acioustic scho canceller , and also Microsoft kernel GS wavetable synthesizer.

Thats unchanged since start, dont know if that helps.

thanks Pete, that last solution was so close right up to the last line . But problem is I can see the problem is where the yellow exclamation marks are but I am not sure which driver is causing the problem. So i cant right click and point because I dont know which driver will update it. Which is what that post said to do. Right from the start these two controllers have come up with the follwoing error message when I double click on them; 'windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicatre device already running in the system ( code 42). '

It seems I have done something no-one else has done?

FYI its the following ; Microsoft kernel acoustic echo canceller and kernel DLS canceller.

The other 6 video and game controllers all say 'device working properly' when I double click .

I am getting an awful lot of advice for nothing from you and am well impressed by what I am learning, even if we still have not solved it.

    thanks anyway for that

    There are drivers here .....

Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller 5.1.2535.0

Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller driver

I can't vouch for any of the above, but they may help.
Have you tried uninstalling them through Device Manager and rebooting to allow Windows to redetect?

You might have a lot of software installed for those different drivers (the software are "audio managers" to make specific settings). Look in Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. Actually, if there were several different types, I would boot into Safe Mode (see Help and Support) and uninstall all of those that are present. Then I would look in Device Manager and uninstall anything with a error status and anything related to audio (it won't hurt, it doesn't work now).

When you reboot, if the Add New Hardware wizards runs, click Cancel, then run the "best" set of drivers installer Pete suggested.

    Matt
PS I see the word "media" in the errors messages you are getting, it reminds me of the errors I got when I was installing drivers for video/audio when I had a TV adapter installed. If you have anything connected to the laptop, disconnect it while you are working on the drivers. mmmm....have you installed something for running internet TV?

    thanks matt, ( and pete,)
    yes I may have installed too much. I have now gone into safe mode and 'uninstal ' and tried to uninstal anything which says 'media'. I uninstalled the conexant audi program and also the modem driver which I installed myself when all this started 3 weeks ago. I have also uninstalled 2 'yellow exclamation' lines in the dvc mgr. They dont seem to be the same ones from before, its now another two. Anyway they are uninstalled and I have done reboot. BUT.... when I reboot another two come back! For info, can you see anything else worth uninstalling? Here is all I have left installed;

Alky for aplications ( windows xp)
    Gadget installer
    Hp update
Intel (R) graphics media accelerator driver
    Lels CPL bonus pack
    logonStudio
    Microsodt .NE Framework 2.0 service pack 2, and 3.0 and 3.5 SP1
Microsoft office 2007 recent docs gadget
    netwaiting
realtek gigabit and fast ethernet NIC driver
    styler
    windows sidebar
    windows sidebar styler
    yahoo toolbar

    And despite uninstalling the follwoing just keep coming back in device manager ;

other devices / modem device on high def audi bus

sound \ audio device on high def bus

I so want to chuck this computer into the nearest wadii.

Appreciate any suggestions you still have and thanks a million for help so far

As they exist they will be redetected on boot.

I would try this Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio which seems to cater for a range of cards - unless it is the version you previously installed.

I think Pete has you headed in the right direction with that Microsoft UAA driver but from what I just read, it has to be installed prior to the HD conexant audio drivers or the SmartAudio 221 drivers. This HP link for your system's audio problems with XP may provide some assistance or guidance, however, it may be helpful to download and install Driver Cleaner Pro http://www.drivercleaner.net/which is now shareware. Use that to remove the Conexant and/or SmartAudio 221 audio drivers only and then install the UAA followed by the HD Conexant audio drivers. Its going to cost you $10 but might do the trick.

Of note - its quite thoughtful of HP not to provide support for any OS other than Vista with that particular PC. Personally, I'd be inclined to advise letting them know how you feel about that policy. Another fine example of a consumer friendly company.

    ;)

    reinstal vista?

any idea if a link exists to download a vista installation disk? ( I dont think so) . I am thinking to put it back to vista again. But my own disk I got new with computer from shop 7 months ago is damaged at btm of my kit bag so I am trully stuck.

I know the driver problem will still be there but I just want to try something different after 2 weeks of getting no where so far. ( despite lots of really good advice which I still benefitted from )

    thanks

No - you cannot legally download Vista, but as Windows 7 is on the near horizon you may like to download RC1 which many folk are now running successfully - free to use for a year.

    Download Windows 7
