In our Outlook Express, we have five identities, my wife, myself, and our three children. We noticed recently that one of daughters' hasn't received any emails for almost a month. She rarely uses the account, so we didn't realize it sooner. I tried sending emails to her but it didn't come through. There is no error message or anything, it just says no new mail. I tried sending an email using her account and it went through just fine. We know she gave out this address to the various colleges she visited this spring, so we need to get this workiing in case any of the admissions offices send her anything. All of the rest of our identities are working just fine. I believe the version is Outlook Express 6. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

The identity may be corrupted - try creating a new identity for your daughter.

How do I go about creating a new identity for her? By doing so, do I risk losing the emails she currently has in her folders? That would be bad as well.

I thought I would report back on the resolution of this.

Well, we got the problem corrected so she can now receive emails again, but much to our dismay, the month's worth of missing emails are apparently gone forever. We discovered that our ISP, Wide Open West, changed her email address for some reason. The part of her address after the @ used to be wideopenwest.com. It was changed to woway.com for some reason. I called the tech support at Wide Open West and explained the problem. They changed the address back to wideopenwest.com then told me the month's worth of missing emails were not recoverable as they were "somewhere out in email hyperspace." The thing is, none of the emails were ever returned to sender, like sometimes happens if there is a problem at the receipient's end. We know some of the emails were important. We had just spent much of the Spring doing college visits with our daughter and she gave out her address to all of the Admissions Offices, and she also would have been sent important emails related to her upcoming ACT and SAT tests. Even though I was able to provide tech support with the date and time after which this switch occurred, (April 28 at 10:18 am) they were also unable to tell us what caused this to happen.

Needless to say, we are very upset with Wide Open West. I suppose I will try to get some sort of credit on our bill, but what we really needed was to recover those emails.

    Bucksone,

Don't feel like you're all alone in this regard. BellSouth (AT&T) has been playing havoc with this too. First they (unannounced and undocumented) felt it necessary to reconcile ISP Passwords with Primary EMail Passwords but didn't tell anyone (tried to accomplish this through a software download and update). Next, they changed their email servers (old ones still work, but ..) (tried to accomplish this through another software download and update). If anyone followed this path, they instituted their own spam filters which were only accessable by logging into webmail.

I throw those ISP software discs in the wastebasket and refuse to load their software, however, I got caught when trying to setup my new IPhone which wouldn't take the old BellSouth server addresses and passwords. So I made the change on my primary email account only to discover that they had begun filtering my mail. Whooaa Fella - I'll do that myself thank you. Had 37 emails from people in my address book that were tagged as spam but I would never have found these if I hadn't gone into their webmail to check account settings there. (I still prefer POP3 and SMTP servers over IMAP)

Hopefully, misery loves company - its hard to believe that changes like what you encountered can be done without prior advisement but your ISP provider isn't alone in this regard.

    ;)
