    What determines the speed a PC "connects" to the net and also moves from app. to app. in various prgrams. @ "Speedtest" my #'s are: Dnld: 2.88 Mb/s Upld: 0.14 Mb/s Ping 151 ms at 50 miles. Dnld: 2.75, Upld 0.24, Ping 120 ms at 900 miles. I'm using IE6 on a Dell 2350 with P4 and over 700MB RAM.

    I'm connecting thru a "Shark-Fin" modem and a Belkin 2.4G 802.11b Wireless router. My ISP "pinged" me and said everything looks good from their end.I keep up with all the XP updates, use CCRapper and run AVAST Home. This PC is a pig! Do I shoot it & get me a new Vostro w/dual core, or can it be saved? :D

    Nothing and everything :confused:

    The (inter)net is a network of networks :confused:, your connection is determined by the maximum capacity of any of those networks that you travel through.

    eg

    Home 10M/bs -> ISP 100Mb/s -> MS 1Gb/s

    In the above case you may achieve 10Mb/s

    Now eg

    Home 10Mb/s ->ISP 1Gb/s -> My Redirector 10Mb/s -> My Website 1Mb/s

    In this case since my site can only serve 1Mb/s that is the best you will get.

    Now consider those are 1 to 1 figures, you may be trying to access a site when thousands are also trying.

    Short answer to your question is it's your ISP, the question you should be asking is "What determines the speed the internet connects to your PC "? ;)

    More...

    So... the connection speed is determined by 2 things: the amount of traffic linking to the site; and the size of the "pipe" connecting my pc to the net, yes? Right now I'm using a cable modem & my ISP says all is well. Simply by "upgrading" my modem & my router will not increase the speed of my downloads & movement within a given site. Is that correct? :rolleyes:

    My PC is quite (QUITE) slow while moving thru app's etc. Feels like when I had WIN98SE! Will a new PC with a dual-core proc. & more RAM (2g +) speed everything up?

    I can't get over the fact that I'm "talking" to someone in SCOTLAND! How cool is that? ;)

    Need to check with your ISP to see what speed/service you're paying for. And or you might be able to upgrade for a price to a faster service.

    Yep

    Also, yep

    This would help your PC's performance and in turn internet access may improve but perhaps there is an underlying issue here, your PC, although ageing isn't a snail. Are you running many applications at the same time?

    Also as Steve asked, what connection speed have you signed up for?

    Not very, I talk to people in Scotland every day :D

    You can also try cleaning up temp files using something like Cleanup! or ATF Cleaner. And, if you are running a bunch of resident scanners (malware), turn them off. Same thing goes for unnecessary programs running at startup.

    Sounds like some housekeeping could be in order.

    ;)
