Apparently, you have confirmed the password on which you want the scheduled task to run is correct as well as the verification of the date and time.

I have XP home, but I understand with pro the backup file cannot have the destination of C drive. Go to msconfig and check the drive specified for the .bkf is not the boot or system volume.

    Backup drive

The backup drive is on a networked PC which is Z:...I know I may be repeating myself, but it comes on for about 2 sec when the schedule time is reaced and then dissapears and does nothing...Manual backup works fine....

I did not see anything in MSCONFIG realated to backup...

I proffered some elementary suggestions that you may have overlooked as sometimes happens when one gets deeply involved.

Your experience with the manual indicates the backup feature works properly, but the problem is with the task scheduling aspect of the backup procedure. Apparently, the task manager routine recognizes the job, but the backup program does not load and run. Are other tasks running as scheduled? Very interesting problem!

Obviously, this indicates the feature doesn't have a history of working with your system so that assumption cannot be ruled out. I don't have pro so I can't verify one way or the other, but I am sure someone on this board should know.

The problem is very specific to auto backup and that would indicate to me if the feature is available the problem is a setting in the registry. I did a quick search for a specific entry in the registry and in HKCR there is a Bak_auto_file, I don't know what the value should be however, nor its significance. There may be a more appropriate entry somewhere else, but if there is a problem it almost has to be in the registry somewhere.

No... I could only dig up 6 references in the MSKB, but they don't seem related.

    Heres what I did...

I ran WINNT32/unattend and reloaded OS. Then I tried to backup.
It worked now to test it.

I tried a restore and it, said it would take 3 days. Any ideas on this one... That sure seems rediculously long...The backup took 1.5 hours with file checker on....

Anyone have any other ideas about testing a backup? Remember the backup is on a networked PC.

I really dont have 3days LOL...

JistAskin - just so you won't feel that your posts are being ignored, I think the problem is that no one currently posting on here has tried the app and, as Arie noted, information on the 'net is scarce and not very helpful.

Appreciate your posting back updates as you have been doing.

FWIW - I agree about the restore time being just plain silly. Maybe a little longer than the backup but since you were doing file checking, only just a little. So something is seriously strange here.

JistAskin, because you indicate high achievement for your experience, I have been following this thread expecting you would find the solution and post.:)

The mystery escalates... 3 days to restore?? For what its worth, I had many strange, weird problems after installing SP1. It was necessary to uninstall for relief; impossible to troubleshoot as the problems didn't make logical sense, nor was there any consistent paradigm. Jist unpredictability!

Your current problem may be better served on the networking forum. Thanks for the feedback.

    Well

It only took 2 hrs to backup and the restore I was runnuing was not to write any existing files and it said 3 days....So it makes no sense to me....

Im still gonna work on it but im going to use Norton Ghost...

I am at home now Win2k! At the office I have some XP computers so I can't look at the bacup utility. Does anyone know if this is the Seagate version!

Educated guess! Hope this works, worth a try!

In any case, 1st take it out of scheduler then go to add/remove remove the backup utility! Run CleanMgr then reboot!

Then reinstall the the backup program and retest!

    Mike
